SF-LUG meeting of Sunday, September 04, 2016

I arrived at the Cafe Enchante about 10:45 AM.
Maestro was waiting and the place was full of
people.

Just as we were moving into the space where the
wired connection computers were formerly located,
the big table by the front window became available
and we moved there, sharing the table with a lady
who moved over at about the same time. She was
using a Mac laptop and was still there when we
left.

I was distressed when I opened my bag and found it
difficult to find the work I had done making fresh copies
of Kali Linux 2016.2. But they has slipped out of touch
in between papers and other cunning places where I
could not find all these disks, (about 5 or 6) until after
Jim showed up. Maestro got a copy of the late version
of System Rescue CD 4.8.1.

I showed off my installation of Salix_14.2-amd64 on the
Dell which is an easy way to install Slackware and which
uses the Slackware repositories and package manager
gslapt (sic). I don't much care for the xfce4 desktop.
which it installs by default, but certainly it is a simple
installation using a text installer. I had already created
a couple of partitions for root and home and it slid
right off the DVD and worked just fine, Also though
I am negative about the sudo system it uses to accomplish
root level tasks.

11:15 AM Ken Shaffer and his wife showed up and Ken
after he had his lunch got busy to talking to Maestro.
about the problem that he was having as Audacity was
set as the default desktop. They worked on this for
at least an hour.
We also discussed using non-native package managers
on systems where other package managers were installed
and I raised the question of the new Snap packaging from
Canonical.
But they then got busy with the problem while I looked
for an article I had seen on Snaps which was quite
elementary. I found an article at
<http://www.prettydesk.com/blog/snappy-vs-flatpak>
which went into greater detail about Snap and Flatpak
(Red Hat's latest entry in the race to replace Debs
and RPMs.
Neither one is completely satisfactory at their current
stage of development Canonical has spent a lot
of resources on Snap development and Flatpak is more
like, some people at RH are working on it. Right now
both formats have problems which you can read about
at the site.

11:40 AM Daniel showed up to get his copy of Kali Linux
2016.2 and began to try to get it to run live and finally settled
for installing it. but we left him there at 1 PM as we left
after giving much advice.

12:40 Jim Stockford showed up and helped Daniel and had
to have the problem Maestro was experiencing explained.

1 PM Jim gave me a ride home

Well as usual I may have missed a few things in my
summary but all who attended are free to correct any
omissions or misapprehensions on my part.

The next meeting at the Cafe Enchante is on
Monday September 19th from 6-8 PM.

As always Thanks for your attention,

     Bobbie Sellers
