Quoting Daniel Gimpelevich (daniel at gimpelevich.san-francisco.ca.us):

So what? Someone _that_ desperate would also put in old X.org software
to go with the old proprietary driver.

But really, this is extremely academic, since you aren't likely to find
ati-driver-installer-8.22.5-i386.run anyway, and since running software
that's not only proprietary but _also_ old/unmaintained is a pretty
dreadful idea.

As I thought obvious, I was not making a practical suggestion, but
rather further outlining what a cruddy deal ATI's driver distribution
is.

If my choice was an obsolete fglrx driver or nothing, I'd personally
consider nothing the better deal: Sell the hardware, get something that
works in open source. However, in Maestro's case, this dilemma doesn't
apply. Seems like all he has to do is install the freakin' firmware
package.
