I arrived about 10:40 AM and the Cafe was very
full due to the Hardly Strictly Blue Grass Music
Festival which filled up the Cafe Enchante and the
nearby parking spaces. Jim had to park back on
Lake Street. i did find a vacant table where i could
setup for the meeting.
Windows nearly got booted but the rest of the setup
of my notebook computer seemed to be going Ok.
until I tried to get online then the problems showed up.
10:58 Michael L. showed up for the first time in months
He had walked across the Park from his home in the Sunset.
The people at adjacent tables finished their meals and
left then the lady with the Apple Air(?)book left so that
Micheal and I were able to pull 3 tables together.
Ken S. and wife arrived by 11:17
John S. shortly thereafter.
Jim showed up and after Noon Joseph P.
arrived and stated that he could have made
to the Davis meeting in less time.
Maestro did not show up in person but tried
a virtual e-mail connection which did not
work out so well. He has a display problem
in that having used a projector he cannot
get back to normal display.
Before I came in I made an DVD of KaOS 2015.09
and it seemed to turn off my WiFi but with Ken's
advice we got it running again.
KsOs uses the latest version of KDE and features
the Calligra Office Suite otherwise it is uninspired.
I tried out Tanglu from the Linux Pro magazine
and is uses LibreOffice but has some other tools.
Finally I booked up Manjaro 2009.09 which somehow
messed up my machine so that I was stuck in
the warm-up to Windows and that was the case
when I got home and it ran for about 20 minutes
before I could shut it down and get back to Linux.
But wait a minute Mageia could not boot so I
scanned about 100,000 lines of Journalcntld (sic)
and finally rebooted and used a desktop recovery
mode from the Grub2 menu in Mageia advanced
options.
All of the distributions I tried out on the machine today
ran KDE's Plasma 5 and it still does not permit copying
of the date/time to the clipboard. Thus I say it is not
yet ready for the average desktop user. It is pretty though.
Mate is not as pretty but it does permit this useful function
though not as well as KDE 4.14.5 handles it.
Jason Kirk had asked for a specific distribution, the latest
version of Debian and I got it ready for him but he failed
to show up to pick it up.
The meeting time went by very quickly.
About 10 minutes to 1 PM we began to pack up our
gear and Jim took about 15 minutes to fetch his vehicle
then gave Joseph P. and myself rides home.
The next meeting at the Cafe Enchante will be on
the 19th of October from 6-8 PM.
If anyone wishes to add to these notes correcting
my information please do so ASAP.
Thanks for your attention!
