I think you mean 14.04.x, rather than 14.01.
"keep all my files, preferences, etc." ... uhm, they way to do that would
be to *not* upgrade. ;-)
Backup ... on-drive - and where it won't get overwritten - or elsewhere.
That's safest bet - and *always* a good idea to backup all data one actually
cares about (actually, backing up to somewhere else is safest bet, and
cover off-site backups and test the backups and restore procedure once
in a while).

There's even a *fair* probability I may make it to SF-LUG this Sunday
... despite what BART is and isn't doing this coming weekend.
There are also probably other folks that have much more experience
upgrading Ubuntu, and could probably answer your questions regarding that
in more specific detail.
