     SF-LUG Meeting of Monday, April 20, 2015

I got to the Cafe about 5:50 PM and sat up
on 3 tables because the place was almost empty.
Mikki M. was the first to show up.
     Followed shortly by Maestro.
By 6:30 PM Daniel G. came in
and it is always good to see him.

Mikki was having a problem with her computer's WiFi
she believed so we connected up my USB 2.0 external
DVD/CD R/W drive and booted up Knoppix 7.5 and she
was able to get online at the Cafe Enchante.
This also served as demonstration of the functionality of
the Samsung USB 2.0 DVD/CD Writer. It also reads well
enough to boot a computer or play music.
So with the help of Maestro, Daniel and myself
she concluded that the problem might be with her
router.

Mikki left early as she has to get back to Brisbane
by public transit. She had asked about good deals on
laptops or notebooks and I have sent her a short list
culled from the Central Computer catalog. That
catalog lists many variations on the Chromebook
theme which makes it a hassle to get to the more
or less normal machines that will be good to use
with Linux.
Maestro kept pretty much to himself but made
a lot of use of the Wifi.

Daniel did not seem to have any problems himself
but had joined us in good fellowship and conversation.

Jim Stockford showed up after 8 PM. He and Daniel were
interested in whether the Hayes Street center had gotten its
new equipment. Jim was given as he had requested
a fresh copy of Knoppix 7.5 and a Live Scientific Linux 7.1.
Since Ron Wellman could not make it to the meeting on
account of work Jim volunteered to carry the disks to
him.

Daniel very kindly gave me a ride to my door.
So that was the meeting and the next meeting is on May 3.

If I have made any errors attendees at the meeting should let us
know about them ASAP.

         ==================================

Library News and recent acquisitions and policy
         changes.

In addition to Scientific Linux I had on hand a fresh copy
of Linux Mint Debian lmde-2-201503-cinnamon-64bit.iso
torrented today from Distrowatch and burnt to disk.

This is a classy job but the clipboard has to be added as a widget,
Cinnamon is not a horrible interface but I do not care for its
features such as the new model program launcher menu nor
its lacks such as a digital clock from which the time cannot be
copied. Well KDE 5.9 is in no better state in the same regard.
LMDe has tools to format and write to memory sticks.

KaOS-2015.04-x86_64.iso burnt yesterday to disk seems
to be a Qt development package. But it has a good selection
of a wide range of tools. But not yet for my production
machine due to using KDE 5.9 which has a certain lack.

So for the past few years I have chased down 64 bit
distributions but since we have people who are still using
32 bit equipment and requesting support I have decided to
seek these out in the future. To that end I have since the
meeting downloaded Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS and 14.10.

If anyone wants one of these 32 bit disks let me know.
