The Linux Users' Group of Davis (LUGOD) will be holding the following meeting:

  March 16, 2015
  7:00pm - 9:00pm

  Community Fiber Optic for Davis
  presented by Robert Nickerson

Optical fiber can be used as a medium for telecommunication and
computer networking because it is flexible and can be bundled
as cables. It is especially advantageous for long-distance
communications, because light propagates through the fiber with
little attenuation compared to electrical cables. This allows long
distances to be spanned with few repeaters.

First developed in the 1970s, fiber-optic communication systems have
revolutionized the telecommunications industry and have played a major
role in the advent of the Information Age. Because of its advantages
over electrical transmission, optical fibers have largely replaced
copper wire communications in core networks in the developed world.

Although fiber-optic systems excel in high-bandwidth applications,
optical fiber has been slow to achieve its goal of fiber to the
premises or to solve the last mile problem. However, as bandwidth
demand increases, more and more progress towards this goal can
    be observed.
