Hmmmm, I'd not heard/read that (but haven't been following it super closely). If so, depending what C library and how widely used that could be even more scary. Teensy bit of search, and I did find: https://github.com/ido/macosx-bash-92-shellshock-patched/blob/master/bash-3.2/lib/sh/getcwd.c But nothing more generally definitive. I did read somewhere, that after the shellshock revelation, many folks looked more closely and carefully at bash, and discovered numerous other vulnerabilities (and at least last I read/heard, many of them haven't been publicly disclosed ... yet). I seem to recall seeing/reading a list of CVEs, or the like, some of which didn't yet have descriptions, etc. - on embargo yet pending pending public disclosure (probably when patches will also mostly be announced and released). > From: "Bobbie Sellers" > Subject: SF-LUG - Meeting of Sunday October 5, 2014 > Date: Sun, 05 Oct 2014 15:15:53 -0700 > Klaus Knopper put out 2 new versions of Knoppix over the last week > or so. I'm debating if I should be cc or bcc. Yes I'm familiar with bcc. A temp agency was sending emails to their cadre of temps, about timecards with everyone just cc, and I objected to having my email address broadcast to strangers that way and requested they use bcc instead. Thereafter, the agency made everyone bcc. Am glad to know I can be bcc here. For networking cc is good, for privacy, bcc is also good. Meeting Details... Cost/Dining: The meetings are always free, but dinner is not (unless you are our guest speaker, in which case we also treat you to dinner). For Henry's Hunan Restaurant, if folks are agreeable, we'll share and dine "family" style, and split up the costs, and typical cost per person including tax and tip (but not including beverages beyond complementary tea) would be in the $13.00 to $17.50 range, and commonly around $15.00 to $16.50. Cash may be preferred to ease splitting up the check. One can also specifically order the dish(es) one needs/prefers (e.g. for dietary considerations) - and we also commonly order some dish(es) that may meet various dietary considerations) (e.g. vegetarian, non-pork, ...). Please arrive by 7:00 P.M., we expect to order entrees at that time, and may order appetizer(s) and/or soup(s) anytime after 6:30 P.M. ------------------------------ We typically have various giveaway items at BALUG meetings. We'll likely have at least the below plus additional items. CDs/DVDs/ISOs, etc. - have a peek here: http://www.wiki.balug.org/wiki/doku.php?id=balug:cds_and_images_etc We may also be able to "burn" images per request or copy to USB flash, etc. Donations of blank or +-RW media, USB flash, or funding thereof, also appreciated. See the above URL for details (and the inventory (qty.) of what we specifically have "burned" and available on-hand does also frequently change). ------------------------------ Last meeting this year, & 2015 meeting dates 2014-11-18 is our last meeting for 2014 (we'll skip December, as we typically do). For 2015, please note our meeting dates (almost always 3rd Tuesday): 2014-11-18 2014-12-16 2015-01-20 2015-02-17 2015-03-17 2015-04-21 2015-05-19 2015-06-16 2015-07-21 2015-08-18 2015-09-15 2015-10-20 2015-11-17 ... Be sure to check http://www.balug.org/ and/or watch our announcements for updates, location and details, etc. ------------------------------ Got venue? We can use your help on leads (and follow-up) for venue! Certainly feel free to discus on our "talk[1]" list. See also the earlier item[2] on our admin list that gives fair overview of what we're hopefully looking to find as for venue. We could certainly use a venue that works well for speakers/presenters (e.g. projector & screen), can handle fair sized crowds (to 30 or more, ideally to over 100 as we sometimes have), is reasonably economical and consistent across varying attendance sizes (e.g. same location or very close in part of same facility), and where dinner/food/beverages are either available at such a presentation facility, or very close by. IF YOU HAVE LEADS ON SPECIFIC VENUE(s) BE SURE TO DROP US A NOTE!: balug-contact at balug.org - and can of course also mention/discuss it on our "talk[1]" list. And much thanks for leads/contacts, useful ideas, follow-up on that, etc. that will get us to our future venue(s)! Henry's Hunan Restaurant - 110 Natoma St. can handle us well in most regards for dining and up to fair size crowd, but we have no screen/projector nor PA capabilities there, so for talks/presentations, only the less formal, smaller, and without projected "slides" would work there. (But in the meantime, the food there is really yummy!) We also expect to announce any and all venue changes reasonably well in advance (week(s) to month or more), so folks have reasonable time to prepare/adjust and aren't (too) "surprised" and so folks don't have last minute changes sprung on them. 1. http://lists.balug.org/listinfo.cgi/balug-talk-balug.org 2. http://lists.balug.org/pipermail/balug-admin-balug.org/2014-July/001504.html ------------------------------ volunteering to help BALUG (and add to your resume/experience) Not only can you do useful and cool stuff volunteering to help BALUG, but it can also be a way to gain useful and practical experience, and could also be something to add to or round out one's resume. I appreciate you... Thanks... Hail info holders... I have an older 686(32bit) Toshi laptop with need of a distro... I am guilty of being out of the loop with the CURRENT best distros in this architecture... I want stable, rolling release, fast, clean, & installed on the internal hard drive... On boot via main power button it gives: "Invalid partition table" when attempting to boot certain distros, others boot through to recognize & print iso version on one line only. I booted a distro someone gave me called Haran's (Heren's) which booted up fine & has a mini-distro of RIP Linux... It loaded files remotely, offered to search & setup network, recognizes wifi networks, lists directories in the terminal, offered to setup partitions, & recognised partitions with fdisk... This is encouraging... Now I'd appreciate your sounding off to a nice, fast, clean, rolling release distro besides debian (or lighter crunch bang) which I LOVE to install on this box... Thanks in advance... I took out the hard disk, and the DVD has been replaced with a second disk caddy (one with the PATA laptop interface, SATA for the disk in the caddy). Power supply and 64bit AMD Turion T52 all good as far as I know. Lots of other good parts. Laptop still boots, but smellslike something is burning. The other two motherboards failed when the solder pads cracked on the Nvidia peripheral controller chip (a common problem). They may be fixable with a heat gun to reflow the chip solder. I tried once and failed, probably didn't apply enough heat. I'll bring it to the Sun. meeting. Nice. By 'Jim', I assume you are referring to Jim Stockford. In case anyone interested in Python doesn't already know of its existence, mention should be made of the tutor at python.org mailing list to which Jim alerted me long ago. It's populated by knowledgeable and very helpful people. Thing is, I actually do have a bunch of hardware sitting in my garage. At least one of them is very likely a functional 1U or 2U rackmount server, which is the right sort of thing to use. (Many desktop boxes have things about them that make them unsuitable, such as many desktop machines' ATX power supplies not being able to be configured to bring the machine back up without manual intervention when the power returns after a power outage.) Just before I went on my last vacation, I moved the hard drives from my server from the failed VA Linux Systems model 2230 to a spare model 2230. To my relief, I got video and was able to boot an Aptosid live CD. Even better, I was able to mount my server system's partitions, verified that they were readable, and update my backups of everything. Thus, at that point, I was no longer in danger of having to revert to an old backup. Using the live CD, I then attempted to fix the software problems that were the _other_ issue aside from failed hardware. (To recap, I had been doing system updates, and (skipping some details) the system segfaulted in the middle of the system software upgrade. I cold booted, but there was from that point forward no video at all, nor beeps, i.e., it acted as if I'd had failure of the motherboard or other key system hardware.) I was not able to find a way to make the system bootable through some hours of experimentation - was getting some bizarre GRUB errors - and had to defer the matter because I had to leave to catch our flight to Barbados. So, I powered down the machine. When I got back from Barbados, I found something perplexing: I heard the system fan running, and saw the blue power light on the front panel, i.e., it was powered up (even though I'd left the system powered down). However, despite that, there was no video. Cold booting the system resulted in... no video. This was really bizarre. The symptom suggested that there had been a power outage during my time in the Caribbean, and upon the return of power, my system had come online (I hadn't unplugged it, just powered it down), and that there had then been a second and similar hardware failure. But this seemed like an implausible coincidence, as perhaps you would agree. Time and experimentation and use of careful logic can get to the bottom of the matter. I just haven't lately had the patience to do that, and have been quite busy with other commitments in the meantime. Sooner or later, I _do_ plan on sitting out in my very cold garage for as long as it takes. I certainly could give up on debugging the VA Linux Systems gear, and just attempt to build from scratch a replacement software configuration on one of the other spare machines I have. I'd prefer not to do that, because building a new server configuration instead of just tracking down the one software problem that made my system unbootable is a LARGE amount of extra work. And, thus, you'll notice, the resource I'm short on is not machines, but rather time, patience, and focus on the problem. About over/under-voltage: Last year, concerned about that very thing, I set about dealing with that. First thing I did was to buy an APC UPS unit over at Central Computer. However, this never seemed like really the right solution, just the commercially easy thing to acquire: A UPS isn't actually very great at dealing with power fluctuations (and sometime is useless at that, depending on the type), and also interposes a new single point of failure in the form of a big lead-acid battery that can, itself, bring down your system. Also, the UPS generates quite a bit of heat, which bloats your PG&E bill, and you have to buy replacement lead-acid battery packs every few years, which are a large percentage of the cost of the entire UPS, each time you have to buy them. What the UPS mostly does - the problem that it exists to solve - is bridge you across short-duration outages, making it so you don't lose power and have continuous uptime. Continuous uptime is abstractly nice, but is the thing I care least about: Linux servers come right back up after power returns. That's what we have journaled filesystems for. So, given that fact, why would I want to put a continually expensive, heat-producing, potentially problematic bit of hardware between the AC outlet and my unit, one that isn't even very good at line regulation, and that can be a Single Point of Failure that otherwise wouldn't exist? In short, I have not been in a hurry to deploy the UPS, because it's mostly a solution to the wrong problem, a solution to a problem I don't care about very much. On reflection, I realised that the right solution is a line conditioner unit, not a UPS. And I don't mean the miserable rubbish you can get at Fry's, either. The problem was: Where do you get a line conditioner of the variety that people acquire who are serious about the problem? Last summer, I solved that problem: I went to the De Anza College Electronics Swap, very early in the morning, and found a vendor who was selling a ham-radio-grade line conditioner unit. I have that with my gear, and expect to use it going forward. Thanks again. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I learn a lot from reading your writing. Maybe not "implausible", rather "unlikely"? As to sitting in the cold garage rather than sitting in more comfortable places doing more necessary or more fun things, if it'll help, I'm willing to come down bundled in warm socks, sweaters..., to keep you company, hold screwdrivers, even biblically just sit and wait (silently). God I wish I'd known of the De Anza College Electronics Swap. I've gotten some great, useful stuff from such. My basic approach to power conditioning is to make sure powerful spikes don't get through: power_line-----Coil_A------------Coil_B----------------------Coil_C-----------------------------------o | | | | | | Cap_A Cap_B MOV_A Cap_C Surge_Diode Cap_D | | | | | | neutral line-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------o closest to PG&E power, little and fast, closest to internal systems, slower but take lots of Joules double and triple components, give coils lots of iron anything we can do, we're willing. jim 415 823 4590 my cellphone, call anytime On 12/30/2014 01:56 PM, Rick Moen wrote: > > On Tue, Dec 30, 2014 at 1:14 PM, jim > wrote: > > A couple of meetings ago, a few SF-LUG folks agreed to > purchase some old box in good working order and with > sufficient resources to host a MailMan system. My primary objection to netsol is its over-the-top emails and offers of services as well as its policy of protecting its control of our (in this case) DNS stuff. I want to move it to joker.com. Netsol will make me jump through objectional hoops to do so. I'll be grateful for any attention others can give to spur me on through this unpleasant prospect. Actions that help me include nagging ("you done yet?") and advice ("you're doing it wrong") on a frequent basis. We eventually got three table lined up. 1105 everything but the optical drive was working and I managed to fix that and booted up/ 1110 the Shaffers showed up and then Joseph P. 1135 Jason got there with problems of installation of Linux on a Windows box from the thrift store. We managed to resolve one of his problems with the log-on using Password Reset CD. We carefully explained the the Dell install disk he had acquired might not applicable to his machine and that first you have to install the MS program launcher then install Linux to get a working dual boot. Joseph P. helped Jason with the use of the Password Reset disk I carry around. I booted up Knoppix 7.4.2 and then with it running installed it to my flash drive. I gave the copy of Knoppix that I used to Jason who had a older version.Oh in case you had not heard Klaus Knopper put out 2 new versions of Knoppix over the last week or so. He was trying to stay ahead of the "Shellshock" problem which Ken says is actually in C library. Knoppix ran fine if a bit nervously. I tried Iceweasel 32.x.x which looks like it is designed to run on a tablet with apps. I tried to check the local weather at CBS5 local and all it would show me was the apps they wanted me to download. I used Google on Chrome and managed to find a weather report but the first one offered was in Germany. I guess Klaus Knopper has the Google site in Germany dialed in. All thru the meeting I took minimal notes on KWrite using a file on an SD card for this purpose. That file was created on the SD card by my file and directory manager. Tom Turner showed up at 1214 with a older machine and a problem running virtual machines. It seems to be his first visit with us. Ken Shaffer assisted him and we tried to make sure he had the disks he needed. Eric showed up about 1245. I had tried to book up Open Mandriva but it was pretty slow and took over the machine. Finally I had to leave the machine running and stick it in my rolling case that way. At home plugged back in the machine, which was extremely hot I managed to break out of the Open Mandriva loop and will try it again when I have little better to do. The main part of the meeting was over about 1 PM but it took me a bit try and repack my rolling case. I rode the 38 Bus back to Geary and I was tired walking two block uphill to my apartment. The next meeting at Cafe Enchante is on 20 October 2014 in the evening (6-8 PM). Hope to see you all there. Corrections and emendations to this report are welcomed. This update mainly adds corrections for security problems to the stable release, along with a few adjustments for serious problems. Security advisories were already published separately and are referenced where available. Please note that this update does not constitute a new version of Debian 7 but only updates some of the packages included. There is no need to throw away old "wheezy" CDs or DVDs but only to update via an up-to-date Debian mirror after an installation, to cause any out of date packages to be updated. Those who frequently install updates from security.debian.org won't have to update many packages and most updates from security.debian.org are included in this update. New installation media and CD and DVD images containing updated packages will be available soon at the regular locations. Upgrading to this revision online is usually done by pointing the aptitude (or apt) package tool (see the sources.list(5) manual page) to one of Debian's many FTP or HTTP mirrors. At least presently we don't have a specific speaker/presentation lined up for this meeting, but that doesn't prevent us from having interesting and exciting meetings and discussions. Sometimes we also manage to secure/confirm a speaker too late for us to announce or fully publicize the speaker (that's happened at least twice in the past). Got questions, answers, and/or opinions? We typically have some expert(s) and/or relative expert(s) present to cover Linux and related topic areas. Want to hear some interesting discussions on LINUX and other topics? Show up at the meeting, and feel free to bring an agenda if you wish. Want to help ensure BALUG has speakers/presentations lined up for future meetings? Help refer speakers to us and/or volunteer to be one of the speaker coordinators. Great food and people, and interesting conversations to be had. So, if you'd like to join us please RSVP to: rsvp at balug.org **Why RSVP??** Well, don't worry we won't turn you away, but the RSVPs really help BALUG and our venue plan for the meeting and accommodations, so please let us know. Meeting Details... 6:30pm Tuesday, October 21st, 2014 2014-10-21 Henry's Hunan Restaurant 110 Natoma St. (between 2nd & New Montgomery) San Francisco, CA 94105-3704 Easy Transit/Parking Access: short walk from BART, MUNI, parking Trip planning: http://www.511.org/ Cost/Dining: The meetings are always free, but dinner is not (unless you are our guest speaker, in which case we also treat you to dinner). For Henry's Hunan Restaurant, if folks are agreeable, we may share and dine "family" style, and split up the costs, and typical cost per person including tax and tip (but not including beverages beyond complementary tea) would be in the $13.00 to $17.50 range, and commonly around $15.00 to $16.50. ------------------------------ Got venue? We can certainly use your help on leads for venue! And much thanks for leads/contacts, useful ideas, etc. that will get us to our future venue(s)! Henry's Hunan Restaurant - 110 Natoma St. can handle us well in most regards for dining and up to fair size crowd, but we have no screen/projector nor PA capabilities there, so for talks/presentations, only the less formal, smaller, and without projected "slides" would work there. (But in the meantime, the food there is really yummy!) We also expect to announce any and all venue changes not later than at the BALUG meeting prior, so folks have reasonable time to prepare/adjust and aren't (too) "surprised" and so folks don't have last minute changes sprung on them. The Four Seas Restaurant lost their lease. So their last day of business there was 2014-09-27, and our last meeting there was 2014-09-16. 1. http://lists.balug.org/listinfo.cgi/balug-talk-balug.org 2. http://lists.balug.org/pipermail/balug-admin-balug.org/2014-July/001504.html ------------------------------ volunteering to help BALUG (and add to your resume/experience) Not only can you do useful and cool stuff volunteering to help BALUG, but it can also be a way to gain useful and practical experience, and could also be something to add to or round out one's resume. Then Jim Stockford showed up and discussion began to be at a higher level when Joseph Puig showed up. It seems that restoring the mailing list is low on Rick Moen's list of priorities according to Jim who had talked to him. Stockford suggested setting up a mailing program on the co-location site where the web page is hosted. That was under discussion when I left them. Some discussion of the potential of Android Linux ensued. Jim is interested in extending the capabilities one way or another. I had a slight problem with the optical drive in my notebook and after I tried to fix it a further problem in that boot time was extended. Enquiries by Jim regarding the weekly meetings at Noisebridge and at the Western Addition location were made of Joseph who was sad to report exceedingly low attendance over the last 3 months or more. About 8 PM we left the Cafe Enchante and Jim gave me a ride home while he went on with Eric and Joseph. When I got home I setup my computer and had it running again in a few minutes. The next meeting will be on Sunday November 2 2014 from 11 AM ro 1 P.M. at the Cafe Enchante. I hope that the information given is largely correct but depend for emendations and corrections by the other attendees. These meetings are usually lightly attended with a high for the year so far of 7 members. If you have a problem come along and frequently we can help but if not we can usually find someone who can. I will have the latest copy of Linux Pro magazine described in a previous post. In addition I have Ubuntu 14.10 if you want a copy let me know ASAP. Recently a new distribution of GParted was released in versions for i486, i686. and x86_64. If any one has a use for the iso files all 3 should fit on a CD. Otherwise I will be making a working copy of the x86_64 version for my own use. If you are running an old single core Pentium or earlier let me know and I will make a working disk for you. I got both the above through the Distrowatch.com site if you don't want to wait. Lots of spins of the new 'buntu coming out, too many to explicate here. Only real news is that this AM I got Thunderbird and Firefox latest versions both at 31.2.0. Both went on as easy as typing this note. No problems afaik with anything. Hope to see you next Sunday. Cafe Enchante was very crowded. Initially I set up my notebook on one on the smaller round tables with John across from me using his iPad. Lat4r on I moved across the isle to another table and we we able to pull up a square table which accommodate 3 people and someone, (John then Tom) across from me. Ken and his wife showed up by 11:00 Then Joseph P. came in subdued in mood. He seemed to enjoy close perusal of the two Linux Pro magazines I brought in. John S. left briefly to transfer some of his inexpensive Dell tower computers to Greg, Jacky B came in with a problem and to try out the Compaq notebook that Ken is giving up. She came in with walking pneumonia (a practice no nurse could recommend) and came just because she said she would. I can respect that very much. Later I made a copy of PC Linux 2014.08 for John S, to install on his new batch of machines. Jim Stockford showed up before 11:45, Eric showed up right at Noon. Ken and his wife left about 12:09 John S. and wife left about 12:25 Tom T. showed up after 12:30 and was given a couple of copies of disks that I could vouch for. He had a little trouble getting online with the Lubuntu(may be incorrect) that is his main distribution. I could not find the utility for getting that distribution online so he switched to Kubuntu and I was able to advise him, Jim and some others as well as myself discussed the problem of getting the mailing list running again. It seems Rick Moen computer on which he was running several lists failed about the time he was gone from his home. It is low on his priorities at the present time. I suggested supplying him with a replacement machine from John's stock of salvaged towers but no one seemed very interested. Jim pointed out that getting the mailing list(s) up and running again would involve lots of effort to salvage the old address lists and so forth. It would mean additional bandwidth and electrical costs as well. This was a pretty good meeting. Thanks to everyone who showed up. Jim gave myself, Eric and Joseph P. a ride first to the Frankenart shop/gallery on Balboa where they had free frankfurters today. Jim and Eric enjoyed these treats. Jim then dropped me at home before 1:45 PM. The next meeting will be on November 17 in the evening. The regular notice will be posted about the 10th of the month. Please if the participants could advise me and the rest of the list of any errors on my part or or emendations, do via the reply to all option in your mailer. That means that every member receiving mail will have the correction faster than I could re-mail it. Bobbie Sellers . It just gets better. I don't care too much for the Full Monty but it runs well on high specification machines with lots of ram and video ram. I installed it last year for a friend with some experience and after a few weeks of helping him a bit it has been satisfactory to this time. It features a YouTube Jukebox on the cover and lots of stuff about Cloud Computing. The Raspberry PI B+ is reviewed. Several other topics are covered including a forensic disk imager called Guymager. Maestro was first on the scene followed by Jim Stockford followed by Cynthia. Eric and Joseph P. showed up. Finally Tom arrived. Jim was pretty tired but seems to have a good appetite. The regular mailing list was briefly discussed. No solution was reached. Rick Moen who ran the list is out of town so can do nothing about whatever problem it had. Maestro and I exchanged quips by and large although he was having a problem with updating his Pulse Audio files on Debian. Cynthia is havng a problem apparently in getting to a Ubuntu installation on her laptop but did not bring said machine along. She was avidly consuming the current Linux Pro magazine. Several people seemed to enjoy the Linux Pro magazines I brought along and Joseph P. carried several year old magazines away when he left. Otherwise I would have left them for the other users of the Cafe to enjoy. I lent Tom the current Linux Pro disk with Knoppix 7.4 and PC Linux OS Full Monty version 2014.08 as the rest of us were leaving. PCLOS is one of the better rolling release distributions according to the Distrowatch Weekly News which has reviews of current distribution and separate assessments of the rolling releases. The Full Monty version presents a KDE interface locked in a 6 virtual desktop configuration with nearly every tool in opened directories with icons to start them up, That is a bit much for me. It would seem to take a high end machine with a very good graphics card with plenty of video ram. I have this already on a flash drive if anyone wants to see a demonstration at a future meeting. Knoppix is well known as a useful distribution for various problems or as a way to install Debian. I have the iso file and maybe a copy or two on disk in addition to the copy on a flash drive for quicker access when problems arise. So when I lent that copy to Tom I was losing nothing and I had already packed up at 8 PM when the matter arose. Jim gave myself, Eric and Joseph P. rides onward. The next meeting at the Cafe will be on December 7. I will notice it the week before the meeting as usual. Thanks for your attention. These meetings are usually lightly attended with a high for the year so far of 7 members. If you have a problem come along and maybe we can help but if not we can usually find someone who can. Meeting times are nominal so that if you come after 7:30 PM we may have left. I will have at least a couple of issues of Linux Pro Magazine and intend to download and try to make an bootable DVD of a live version of Fedora 21 Got there about 1040, very crowded. Moved to a central table ASAP. Ken Schaefer and wife showed up fairly early, Ken brought along a broken computer and all his expertise with which he helped me as much as possible with my machine. We used Knoppix 7.4.2 to check the disk partitions and found no errors, We tried Boot Repair Disk several times but since it could not connect to the net (apparently)it failed every time. John Strazziano showed up with the inexpensive small desktop machine bur left it in his car. He has a problem with an iffy network connector on his older laptop. Joseph Puig showed up and enjoyed the conversation I believe. Jim Stockford showed up about the time were were getting a bit worried. He borrowed the latest Linux Pro to read a specific set of articles about new tools for the WWW I believe. Eric showed up about the end of the meeting. Ken and I worked on the notebook until the end of the meeting. It wanted to be on the Web but the Boot Repair Disk could not connect at the Cafe probably due to the limited number of drivers available on the CD. Around 1 PM we adjourned as the Shaffers exited wishing us all a Merry Christmas. Jim gave myself, Joseph and Eric a ride onward while he bought the little desktop from John. Eric got a couple of hot dogs at FrankenArt and I was home by 1:45 PM. Thanks for your attention. Message-ID: <5487D4F3.3080203@dslextreme.com> Hi LUGgers, I downloaded both the Fedora Live W(ork)S(tation) 21-5 and the Fedora Live KDE 21-5 both for the x86_64. Both on DVDs booted without problems. Both have tools to install the iso file to Flash Drives for faster responses. This is a good idea by the way as the boot is a bit slow. If anyone wants to try out the 686 versions let me know ASAP. Kernel is 3.17.x and works fine. The Work Station version is fairly complete but the KDE version lacks a lot of the KDE tools that i use every day. It does not have Firefox but Conqueror. The KDE is not extremely advanced but the plasma cashew when its space is taken up by a panel shrinks down to a small square with the same capabilities as the full size cashew at least in the upper right hand corner. This is a neat trick and I hope the version of KDE in Mageia release 5 due next month has it. No problems working with either versions. WS has Libre Office tools while the KDE uses another system, Calligra, I believe. So it has nearly all the other desktop window managers available on separate iso files, Mate, LXDE, Xfce. Hope to see some of you guys next Monday. I got my notebook setup about 5:55 PM. 1800 Michael Paoli showed up and in a few minutes, Michael Rojas 1810 Maestro showed up 1830 Josep Puig came in. Maestro brought along his older 32 bit notebook and I gave him the 32 bit disks or recent distributions he was interested in. But he had a problem with his machine and it resisted booting from most CDs or Flash drives so we all got involved in the problem. Finally seemed to be an old BIOS or hardware problem. We could not fix it but if it can be fixed Maestro has plenty of various 32 bit Linux distributions to try on it. Michael Rojas was interested in the distribution I use Mageia 4.1 from last year and I demonstrated the main line Fedora 21 with it Gnome-like interface. Then I showed off my own installation of Mageia and briefly demonstrated PCLOS Full Monty. Micheal Rojas took Mageia 4.1 and Fedora 21 disks home along with a recent edition of Linux Pro magazine. As it chanced Jim Stockford was feeling too ill to get to the meeting and so informed me in a phone call Monday afternoon. At 8 PM the meeting was adjourned though the two Michaels were still talking about one and another thing, including other LUG meetings and the new group interested in software controlled radio, Michael P. had brought along a lot of disks and several books, one on Ubuntu and the other relating to Cloud Administration. I think Michael Rojas may have taken one or the other. If I neglected anything important I am sure the attendees will be willing to remind me. This was the final meeting at the Cafe Enchante in 2014. Next meeting at the Cafe Enchante will be on Sunday, December 4. 2015. I will send a regular announcement out on the 29th December unless factors beyond my control prevent. Happy Holidays! These meetings are usually lightly attended with a high for the year so far of 7 members. If you have a problem come along and maybe we can help but if not we can usually find someone who can. Meeting times are nominal so that if you show up too late we may have left. I have obtained Kubuntu 15.04 Alpha Vivid Vervet and it works well, booting up in Live Mode to KDE 5.x The task bar is white and the background is pastel tile in a triangular format. The use of the next release of KDE was the main point of interest to me. KDE 5 seems more solid than the early KDE 4.x releases which were pretty much shoved down the users' throats, i.e. if you wanted the other updates then you had to use the new version of KDE. The 1.2 Gigabyte iso file includes lots of good software but not everything that I prefer. As well I was able to get the latest WiFiSlax 4.10 which is full of tools all having to do with WiFi and finding out how to use them would be an education in networking in itself. As indicated by the name it uses Slaxware repositories but can use others from what I can figure out. One thing is that this is a Spanish release and while parts of that can be changed to English perhaps more easily on a hard disk install with the live mode it is less accommodating. The iso file is 795 Megabytes so it has to go on a DVD and be read by a DVD drive. ================================== Just before Christmas PCLOS released a full set of updates calling it 2014.12 in all the formats and architectures it supports. So if users have kept up with the updates then they have no use to install this except as an easier starting point if they have a problem with the current install. Better than that they promise the next release sometime in 2015 will have a lot of stuff that were previously rejected by developers of PCLOS."Future releases will default to GRUB2 and support UEFI and GPT partition formats."to quote from the release announcement. I have the iso files for each version of KDE live/install disks/or Flash Drives. I will say that I had a failure on my attempt to make a bootable update drive from the iso in live mode but had no trouble finding the iso files in my Downloads directory. I will be making a couple of DVDs for 32 bit and 64 bit KDE versions. If you want an alternative desktop environment such as Mate or LXDE let me know and I will try to get a copy for you. ================================== Finally I got a copy of Rosa, a Russian fork of Mandriva. I have't had time to sort it out yet, Hope to see you at the meeting. Jim, If you can pick out a post from my past make a copy and save it to the Templates folder on Thunderbird. Open the post in the Templates folder and edit it to remove all the text then save it back to the Templates with the addresses intact. When you want to mail something to the list you just open the template copy and edit it. As a matter of fact to make it easy I will send out a template with all but the bcc addresses (only 3) to everyone on the list. Then anyone as in a proper anarchy can initiate a discussion. > > A couple of meetings ago, a few SF-LUG folks agreed to > purchase some old box in good working order and with > sufficient resources to host a MailMan system.
