[sf-lug] Linux Mint arduino install issue - not able to update to newer version

Hi to all,
I'm trying to update my arduino from 1.0.1 version to the 1.0.5 version and I'm failing, always being stuck to 1.0.1.
I did apt-get install arduino etc. (and did the update and upgrade of the whole system afterwards with restart).
I've tried synaptic package manager, with Mint arduino is suppose to be in repositories - did not work (I included the aruino-core package too).
I've downloaded the 1.0.5 version from arduino official page
http://arduino.cc/en/main/software - for Linux 64 bit
used tar to unpack it and interestingly when tried to install it by the usual ./config make etc. nothing happened
"make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop." (just an example)
and no readme file in the directory to check for installation procedures ...
This last way was suppose to be the safest to get the up to date version but somehow it doesn't function. I've tried to run executable in the directory and it did not work either (after removing the arduino programm form /usr/share/arduino).
Any ideas what do I do wrong or how to sort this out? My last shot is to try to use Windows virtual machine or my girlfriends Windows ditro but I would really like to avoid it. The reason why I need the newest version is to be up to date with the github repositories of our experimental incubator project, there were some issues which are likely to be related to the fact that I'm on 1.0.1 and the rest of the group is on 1.0.5 or well newer than me.
Many thanks for any info,
Sincerely,
