Ubuntu uses AUFS.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/aufsRootFileSystemOnUsbFlash

One of the problems with that is that AUFS remains out-of-tree, i.e.,
has not been accepted by the mainline kernel developers.

Last I heard, no implementation has yet passed muster on LKML, not Union
FS, not AUFS, nor overlayfs. (My information might be out of date.)

There is also a userspace (FUSE) implementation, FWIW, unionfs-fuse.
