- The new bios could be disabling the backlight for some reason.
- The identifier of the backlight device might have changed, so
  udev is no longer recognizing it.
- The identifier of the machine itself might have changed, so udev
  isn't finding the keymap to increase/decrease the backlight.
- Lots of other possibilities I haven't thought of.

Or, of course, there's the scarier possibility that they might have
opened up the machine and accidentally dislodged a wire and now the
actual hardware is broken.
