Does xrandr say anything? It should be able to query the video
input and report the resolution of anything plugged in.
Unfortunately it doesn't report any other details about the monitor,
but if it sees 1600 x 1200 that tells you something.

You've tried more than one cable, right? Or a cable that works with
another monitor on the same PC?
