Well, yeah, I did 'startx' for years. I vaguely recall that there
are some security advantages to xdm (and presumably more recent kin),
and, if it's a machine where you're usually going to be needing X11,
dispensing with the repeated X11 startup time of 'startx' becomes A Good
Thing.
