[sf-lug] alternatives to ubuntu?

it was trivial:
apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
took about 10 minutes and now i'm happy
the trick is to pay attention after rebooting to the very small options
at the bottom of the screen, when you can select (among others) xfce or
xubuntu.
what remains to be seen is whether any of my applications are tied too
closely to gnome
