However concerning your visit of Noisebridge, you can come to Noisebridge 24/7 it is completely open platform. If you do not have a mobile phone to open the doors or a physical key you just ring the bell and within 30 sec somebody will open the door or you ring again. People are around most of the time from 10 am to 1 am in the night. Before I forgot tomorrow is a Noisebridge 3 year birthday party, so you are more than welcome to join us. I'll get back to you later on today or tomorrow for more planing but I already confirm Tuesday 3 pm at Noisebridge in the linux classroom (next to t he dirt shop). Hopefully Jim will be around he is a saver! Thanks for your time and effort, it is highly appreciate it.. Just to give you a bit of background, this activity/project is a part of a bigger one = build up of a multimedia center in Tzajala, Chiapas, Mexico (January 2011). This project will be posted within two weeks time and I certainly would like to get people together to work on it togethter, it is much more fun (here and there too). Message-ID: Well the next meeting of SF-LUG will be Monday 18 October from 6-8 PM (nominally) at Cafe Enchante 26th and Geary Boulevard in San Francisco. Jim Stockford has written that he will be bringing along the remaining free book(s). I have decided to skip bringing my laptop computer but for the use of people without a CD/DVD drive in their computers I will bring along my external USB CD/DVD drive. That this would be valuable became quite apparent after the last meeting when the USB flash drive with Knoppix failed to provide a stable install onto Anthony's new machine. I hope that anyone who wishes to use this will find out earlier how to access their BIOS so that it won't be a hassle to set the machine to boot from the external USB drive. I will try to bring along the latest Linux Pro and the latest Linux Journal which I can get from the news stand. BALUG meeting Linux Lawyers (& software for Laywers) Linux/Ubuntu CDs ------------------------------ Bay Area Linux User Group (BALUG) meeting Tuesday 6:30 P.M. 2010-10-19 Please RSVP if you're planning to come (see further below). For our 2010-10-19 BALUG meeting, at least presently we don't have a specific speaker/presentation lined up for this meeting, but that doesn't prevent us from having interesting and exciting meetings. Sometimes we also manage to secure/confirm a speaker too late for us to announce or fully publicise the speaker (that's happened at least twice in the past five or so years). Got questions, answers, and/or opinions? We typically have some expert(s) and/or relative expert(s) present to cover LINUX and related topic areas. Want to hear some interesting discussions on LINUX and other topics? Show up at the meeting, and feel free to bring an agenda if you wish. Want to help ensure BALUG has speakers/presentations lined up for future meetings? Help refer speakers to us and/or volunteer to be one of the speaker coordinators. Good food, good people, and interesting conversations to be had. So, if you'd like to join us please RSVP to: rsvp at balug.org **Why RSVP??** Well, don't worry we won't turn you away, but the RSVPs really help BALUG and the Four Seas Restaurant plan the meal and meeting, and with sufficient attendance, they also help ensure that we'll be able to eat upstairs in the private banquet room. One approach is to use the previous release's "Startup Disk Creator" to put the new iso onto a (1-2G) live USB, then use this live USB to install to a 4G USB stick. This approach avoids the use of a CDROM, but assumes you have a computer which can boot off a USB device. If you have access to an Ubuntu 10.10 system, its USB startup creator has fewer problems than with earlier releases, but success is possible with a fully patched Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) system. Earlier distributions or non-current Lucid systems will have additional problems like "unknown keyword"s whose solutions are posted (Google them) in great numbers, burying all other problems/solutions. Summary for the impatient: 1)Start with a fully patched Lucid system. 2)From the BIOS setup, disable non-present devices in the boot order (New problem with Maverick). The non-present floppy causes sdb media missing errors. I disabled the CDROM as well, since it had been removed. 3)Use system/administrator/ Startup Disk Creator " with the Maverick iso. 4)See what happens when you try to boot. ESC at the logo will give you the log. Device errors like sdb seem to be related to missing floppy fd0, sda errors to windows hibernation nonsense. Errors seem to repeat forever. 5)F6 to interrupt the boot early, to get to the language selection screen, then the usual text menu. 6)Insert the target USB (4G+) (pre partitioned for the 128k erase block size) and choose "Install". I don't bother with swap, making the whole 4G root. 7)Rebooting the 4G stick, grub edit the boot command to reduce the device references by one (hd2 -> hd1, and sdc -> sdb). 8)After successful boot, sudo update-grub to fix the grub configuration. 9)Tailor your new USB system. I typically run Ubuntu off a USB device on a laptop with Windows on the internal hard disk. I prefer to upgrade without burning a startup CD-ROM because of hardware problems, but sometimes that is not possible, because the "old" "Startup Disk Creator" will not accept the "new" iso. Downloaded the i386 desktop iso and ran the md5sum check. On a fully patched Lucid (10.04) system running on a USB hard disk, ran the "system/administrator/Create Startup Disk" to create a live usb startup disk. I wrote the Maverick iso to a 2G SD card in a USB reader with no problem, but the card would not boot. The Maverick live USB would get to the Ubuntu logo, with the changeing color dots, but no further. ESC showed the errors, a get getpwuid error followed by a repeating set of device sdb not found, and Windows hibernated and would not mount, with sda errors. The install media created from a current Lucid system did not have any errors for unknown keywords in syslinux.cfg as reported by others from earlier releases. Fix 1)In the BIOS, disable the floppy (and the removed CDROM). This gets rid of the sdb errors. This was never necessary before, sigh. Fix 2)Hit F6 at initial boot, select language, and from the text menu, select install. This avoids the Windows mount nonsense, and allows the install to run. I installed the system to a 4G USB thumbdrive. See previous posts about the partitioning for the 128k erase block for the flash memory. The 4G thumbdrive would not boot of course, but this is an old problem. Grub cannot find sdc since there is no longer an sdc. The USB install media was sdb, it set up the target as sdc, but without the boot media, the target becomes sdb. Fix 3)Reboot and choose e to edit the boot entry, and fix the wrong devices. I changed hd2 to hd1, and on the boot line, changed sdc1 to sdb1. Control X gave a successful boot. First thing, sudo update-grub to fix the wrong boot devices. A USB startup disk created on my new Maverick system avoided the Windows mount error, and in the target grub configuration, used the UUID instead of the wrong sdc, but it still had a wrong reference to hd2 instead of hd1. Tailoring the new system Since my laptop uses 4311/12 Broadcom chips, I need to supply the firmware missing from the Ubuntu distribution. I have been using the open firmware for awhile with good success, so I just copied the b43-open directory into /lib/firmware and network manager found my access point. Newer Broadcom chips may require the installation of the b43-fwcutter package (while hardwired to a network), and accept the download offer of the firmware. I don't even bother to enable the "system/Hardware Drivers" for any of the Broadcom drivers -- so the default b43 driver works with the open firmware. Since flash memory has a limited number of writes, I use some ramdisk mounts for high write traffic directories. This also speeds things up. To set up ramdisks for /tmp and /var/log, add the following just after /proc in /etc/fstab: # update-manager cannot see any space in /tmp when ramfs is used tmpfs /tmp tmpfs size=256M,mode=1777 0 0 ramfs /var/log ramfs mode=755 0 0 The next thing I do is to add a mkdir of /tmp/debs/partial to my /etc/rc.local and make the deb download directory /var/cache/apt/archives point to this location. The update-manager will now dump the new packages into ram instead of onto the flash memory. Now run update-manager and you should be all set. Maverick will boot off this USB in less than a minute. One difference I have noticed from Lucid is that network-manager seems to take a little longer before it starts to connect. All sorts of other things can still be tweaked. I like to add a user whose home is in /tmp (on ramdisk in my case). Still working on ways to have users run mostly from ram, but to have permanent storage available if needed. I'm back in town, and should be attending some SF user group meetings. Good Luck Ken -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... If I cut a section of text (highlight, then ctrl-x), then highlight & delete (via Delete key) another piece of text, then paste (ctrl-v), I get the deleted text, not the cut text. I'm blaming GNOME since it happens between various independent apps. I could perform the cut in gedit, and the delete in netbeans, and the paste in an email, and I get the same results. Oh, and it doesn't happen 100% of the time. I haven't changed any mappings or keyboard shortcuts, and have even triple-checked various preferences to ensure I hadn't accidentially enabled this somehow or been pranked by IT. Nope, everything's default and nothing I can find indicates that this behavior is enabled. I'll spare the list my rant about how offensive this is, both to a user and to the linux philosophy (why is 'delete' doing two things and acting like cut?!?); suffice to say it's driving me nuts. Has anyone observed this and/or have any ideas on how to fix it? Thanks, Alex -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I don't see anyway to change this behavior though I will keep looking. This clipboard is about as good as the one in AmigaOS 1.3 which didn't noticeably improve by AOS 3.9. However for a work-around you might try selecting the text you wish to replace then doing the paste directly into the selected area. This works for me and seems to keep the replaced text out of the clipboard. later bliss From bliss at sfo.com Tue Oct 26 22:18:56 2010 From: bliss at sfo.com (Bobbie Sellers) Date: Tue, 26 Oct 2010 22:18:56 -0700 Subject: [sf-lug] GNOME cut/paste/delete issue In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: On 10/26/2010 08:49 PM, Alex Stahl wrote: > > Thanks for the suggestions. The expectation is that the delete key simply eliminates the highlighted stuff and, importantly, does not disturb the global clipboard. In some contexts, the delete key copies the stuff to the global clipboard. The immediate work-around is to paste the clipboard contents to something, anything to preserve them, before using the delete key. The intermediate project seems to be to learn in what context the delete key copies to the clipboard. I agree that the delete key should not disturb the clipboard, so, per the definition that a bug is behavior that is not expected, I say file a bug. It ought to be apparent to whom after learning the various contexts in which the bad effect happens. It supports downloading via HTTP, HTTPS, and FTP protocols, the most popular TCP/IP-based protocols used for web browsing. Its features include recursive download, conversion of links for offline viewing of local HTML, support for proxies, and much more. It appeared in 1996, coinciding with the boom of popularity of the Web, causing its wide use among Unix users and distribution with most major Linux distributions. Written in portable C, Wget can be easily installed on any Unix-like system and has been ported to many environments, including Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, OpenVMS, MorphOS and AmigaOS. It has been used as the basis for graphical programs such as GWget for the GNOME Desktop and KGet for the KDE Desktop and VisualWget for Windows. [Description from Wikipedia]. Micah Cowan was maintainer of Wget between mid-2007 and early 2010. His talk will discuss: * What is Wget? * My history with Wget * How to use Wget + Restartable downloads + Website archiving/recursive downloads + Fine-grained controls over which links to follow + Content conversions for local browsing * Wget shortcomings * Lessons learned while maintaining Wget * Issues unique to maintaining a GNU project For more details on this meeting, visit: http://www.lugod.org/meeting/ For maps, directions, public transportation schedules, etc., visit: http://www.lugod.org/meeting/explorit/ About LUGOD: The Linux Users' Group of Davis is a 501(c)7 non-profit organization dedicated to the Linux computer operating system and other Open Source and Free Software. The problem triggered a deep X bug that may be getting more triggers or it may be some similar bugs that are unrelated. What are other people's experience with this? It's a Toshiba Satellite M645-S4080, and it has a nice backlit keyboard that works great in windows, but doesn't work in linux with ACPI enabled. I'm running 64-bit Ubuntu 10.10. Here's a thread where a lot of people are having the same problem, but no one has found a solution: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1533744 When I boot with the flag acpi=off, the keyboard works great. But only 1 of my 4 cores gets recognized and the keyboard keys to adjust the screen brightness stop working, and possibly other stuff too. I've also tried booting with a bunch of other ACPI-related flags: acpi=ht, acpi=noirq, pci=noacpi, pnpacpi=off, noapic, nolapic. None of them make the backlit keyboard work, only acpi=off. I know hardly anything about ACPI. Is it possible for me to enable it, but just disable the part that's preventing the keyboard from working right? I've looked through the repository for ACPI packages but nothing that has anything to do with keyboards. Any ideas? I'd be glad to bring this laptop to a LUG meeting too if anyone thinks they can make it work. A number of volunteers have been working very hard for free for 6.5 years now in various public schools around the Bay Area to place GNU-Linux machines in public schools. We have established a good foundation, and we now want to build on that foundation. The teachers appreciate Linux, are not afraid of it, and use it heavily for a wide variety of functions, including some mission-critical functions such as reporting grades and so forth, at least in some schools. In some of the schools, Linux is the only platform to which the kids have access for reaching the Internet. All of this is a marvelous accomplishment, and we want to extend that achievement. But to do so, we are going to need to bring in funds. We have been running entirely on volunteer fumes. If we are going to expand, we will need to establish a financial foundation to build on the foundation of goodwill we have achieved and technical prowess that we have demonstrated. Toward that end, we are holding an initial fundraiser to build a fundraising committee on December 15, 2010, at 5 pm at 1601 Turk Street, at the Creative Arts Charter School, in the Board Room. The purpose of this meeting is to create a group of dedicated volunteers who will focus on fundraising for our Linux-schools efforts. We will be providing modest refreshments, and we will be asking for a suggested donation of $25.00 at the time of the 12/15/10 meeting to kick off our fundraising drive. Free open source software has created a lot of jobs and wealth, and now is a great time for us to expand our efforts to bring the considerable benefits of free software to those who really need it most, namely, public schools whose budgets have been mercilessly slashed for more than a decade. Supporting education fits very well with the FOSS culture of expanding knowledge, transparency, and democracy. Attending this fundraiser would be a great way for the members of this list to make a commitment to supporting our proven and very successful efforts to get FOSS ideals into the broader society. We will not be asking for too much of your time. We will only be asking you to share your contacts will us, and help us do outreach to get your friends and neighbors to make small but meaningful financial contributions to our efforts. One of the specific goals of the 12/15/10 fundraiser will be to prepare for a larger fundraiser to be held in the spring at the Creative Arts Charter School. That fundraiser will be a large installfest and FOSS festival. We are planning to have booths for Bay Area FOSS-related groups, such as local LUGs and local FOSS-related businesses, both large and small. We will have barbeques and games for kids. It will be a fun, family-oriented event that will have the dual purpose of raising money and soliciting hardware donations, which will be triaged on the spot and we will install GNU-Linux on machines that are brought in, so that we can turn those machine right around and install them in the 6 Bay Area Schools where we have a FOSS presence. Also for the 12/15/10 event, we are asking people to bring working laptops, printers, monitors, keyboards, and optical mice towers to donate. Our minimum spec for donation is 512 MB of RAM and at least 1.8 Ghz chips or the AMD equivalent. Thanks again to Mark Terranova for helping us promote the 12/15/10 event! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... My Knoppix looks like an opened ISO but his Ubuntu looks like a normal disk based install. Ubuntu has a specific utility to make this sort of install. Ken's comes in Gnome 2.3.2 and the Knoppix comes up in LXFE. Around 1255 we packed up and left Ken went his way with his charming wife and Jim gave myself and Jeff a ride home. They found there weren't many companies building computers optimized for Linux. Since Cathy had grown up in Redmond, WA and since both Earl and Cathy had lived in Austin, TX amongst the Dellionaires, they found that it would be quite interesting and fun to create their own computer company. In early 2007 they founded ZaReason, Inc. Cathy's background includes forming a successful non-profit, Partimus.org that supplies educational institutions internationally with Linux-only desktops and laptops for school's computer labs, run by Christian Einfeldt. Cathy's presentation is titled, "Is Ubuntu Easy Enough for a Six-Year Old?" where she will tell the stories that surrounded her family's decision to devote their time and careers to building ZaReason. There were many funny circumstances involving their entry into Linux. Come enjoy hearing about one family's introduction into easier computing. She will also be seeking your input, so if you have goodness to share, you are warmly invited. As one of Cathy's signature presentation "extras", she will be doing a Pop Quiz at the end, testing your general knowledge of the History of Computing, during which she will offer several prizes. It has Virgin Mobil (VM) cell phone access (Sprint owns the VM system in USA). I have 30 days to decide to keep or return it. Runs Android. Could be a superb value, with unlimited internet at $25/m from VM, which includes 300 minutes talk time. Unlimited talk over wifi through Google talk. IIRC, 1200min talk for $40. Might be a great value for the budget minded, like students (hence my post to BTIP). If you're interested, get to Radio Shack right away cause the discount intro pricing ends soon. = Two main questions I'm currently looking for answers to: 1) How can I tether a laptop through wifi to the SI through VM to the internet? 1b) Tethering via USB would be better, but IIRC I heard somewhere that teth via USB is impossible with Android. Any way to get USB tethering working under Android? 2) What is the GNU(Linux) way to use this computer? What distro should I put on it? Is there an Ubuntu or Debian distro for handheld computers like this? 2b) Any suggestions about getting root & howto put a G(L) distro on? 2c) Should I merely get root, & leave the Android system on? The user interface seems to lack organization, lacking a nicely organized application grouping. It just has about 20 icons for different programs. Runs Android 2.1. The RS (IIRC) sales guy said Samsung doesn't have 2.2 on any Samsung phones yet, although 2.2 has been out for about 6 months. If I should leave Android on it, what might I do about it not having 2.2 available? Is that of much importance? Any GNU(Linux) handheld computer users on this list? He has spent much time in Portland, Oregon working with FreeGeek.org[2]. Their unique style helped him learn how to involve more people in computing. This knowledge has helped him in his role as co-founder of Gidget Kitchen[3] (GK). "Gidget Kitchen donates computers, generally using Ubuntu, to groups and individuals." GK strives to make modern technology simple, empowering, and easy for everyone to understand. The only requirement is the ability to "play well with others." Mark blames his interest in technical things and electronics on his father Michael. "He gave me a Commodore 64 and helped me get my amateur radio license (N6TBD) at an early age". 1. http://fedoraproject.org/ 2. http://www.freegeek.org/ 3. http://www.gidgetkitchen.org/ See also a bit further below for some additional goodies we'll have at this meeting (CDs, etc.) So, if you'd like to join us please RSVP to: rsvp at balug.org **Why RSVP??** Well, don't worry we won't turn you away, but the RSVPs really help the Four Seas Restaurant plan the meal and dining arrangements and such. Last week I had some machines at the Mission Beacon http://missionbeacon.org/ after school program in San Francisco that I couldn't boot directly from USB sticks. This little program did the trick then and now. Specifically, after downloading, unzipping and copying the plpbt.bin file to /boot/ one can add the following to the grub2 menu: menuentry "plpbt" { set root='(hd0,0)' linux16 /boot/plpbt.bin } Another option listed on the IsoLinux pages I haven't yet tried is the Smart Boot Manager. http://btmgr.sourceforge.net/ Regards, Grant -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I hope he posts details. > Thanks for asking, Jim. I did post this summary on 11/5/10: http://linuxmafia.com/pipermail/sf-lug/2010q4/008184.html A number of volunteers have been working very hard for free for 6.5 years now in various public schools around the Bay Area to place GNU-Linux machines in public schools. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We were able to get several monitors, some of which we gave to our primary equipment donor, ACCRC.org, which monetizes the monitors. We probably gave about $100.00 worth of monitors today to ACCRC.org, which means that we will have just that much in value coming back to our schools in terms of equipment. Not strictly required since it's pretty informal, but if you feel like signing up I also created a LoCo Directory entry for it: http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/team/572/detail/ So drop by and say hello, have a chat about Ubuntu, bring along your laptop that you're having that weird problem with so we can take a look or just have a warm drink with other Ubuntu users. -- Elizabeth Krumbach // Lyz // pleia2 http://www.princessleia.com From a_kleider at yahoo.com Sun Dec 5 17:33:32 2010 From: a_kleider at yahoo.com (Alex Kleider) Date: Sun, 5 Dec 2010 17:33:32 -0800 (PST) Subject: [sf-lug] is there an "rsync" equivalent to "cp -l" Message-ID: <759674.64180.qm@web36508.mail.mud.yahoo.com> The version of the copy (cp) command that comes with the Mac OSX does NOT have the -l option but the mac does come with the rsync command. The combination of these three classes of devices, which -- by coincidence? -- all reached market at the same time, enables fundamentally different ways of interacting with computers, ways which had previously been limited to well-funded research labs and well-researched science-fiction movies (yes, both of those things do exist). In this talk, Oliver will show examples of such natural user interfaces employed in his facility, the UC Davis W.M. Keck Center for Active Visualization in the Earth Sciences (KeckCAVES, www.keckcaves.org), explore how they work -- and why they work -- and how the combination of commodity entertainment hardware and free, GNU/Linux-based software can recreate them in an everyday, albeit still somewhat upscale, living room. They are interested in having supporters of Linux in schools (and particularly Partimus.org) attend a show. The show airs daily from 3 pm to 4 pm. I need a list of 25 people who will attend. I need the list by Thursday at 3 pm. You can watch shows from the archive here 7liveonline.com They have had famous people like Mark Zuckerberg on this show. The show features a host, Brian Copeland, with his two co-hosts, Elizabeth Bermuda and Jennifer Jolly. Jennifer Jolly was an anchor on another ABC show. During the show, the hosts will be chatting about technology and non-profits, and they will ask questions of 10 people in a portion of the audience called the Voice Box. Apparently, the Voice Box is situated just to the left of the hosts, and the hosts will talk with them occasionally. Apparently, there will time for numerous sound bites from the audience, say 5 to 10 seconds in length. It is not a lot of time for speeches, but it is time for several one-liners from the audience in response to questions from the hosts. Audience members are also allowed to boo and to clapp. Again, the focus of this show will be technology and non-profits, and so the hosts will be asking us substantive questions that call for brief, snappy, on-point responses. My impression is that this is a serious opportunity for us to present Partimus to a Bay Area audience. We need 25 people to come to the Jackson Square district of San Francisco at Front and Pacific on Monday, December 13, 2010. The Voice Box section of the audience can hold 10 people, and 2 people unrelated to Partimus have aleady signed up to be on that show. During a break in the show, the hosts will rotate people out of the Voice Box so that others can rotate into the Voice Box and participate in the show. Even if you don't want to get into the Voice Box, this is an opportunity to support Partimus and Linux by showing up and cheering and making noise when Partimus or Linux is mentioned. They want a lively show, so enthusiasm will definitely help. If you want to show up, you need to send me an email confirming that you will be there, and I will add your name to a list of attendees. Your name must be on the list for you to be admitted to the show. Please do RSVP early for this event! Dear Christian & Partimus, Welcome and thank you for participating in *7Live?s* ?Voice Box? studio audience, YOUR NAME MUST APPEAR ON THIS TICKET. I'm not sure about what you meant with regard to hard drives but my experience with printers and scanners is as follows. Printers: I've currently got two running, one on each of my two home networks. Both are laser printers and both are network printers. CUPS is good at dealing with IPP, the Internet Printing Protocol, and I had no trouble setting them up. The CUPS web interface walks the user through the configuration process and selects appropriate defaults in most if not all instances. A new release (as of probably a year or more ago, actually 'discovers' network printers and is extremely easy to use. It's been a long time since I've hooked up a USB connected printer but as I remember, the process was not too difficult. Scanners: BAD! I have an Epson scanner that I'd like to put into use but I've been unsuccessful. There was an article about this subject in Linux Journal recently but that didn't help. One final work about Laser Printers: I got one for $50 from a guy in Mountainview that takes them out of offices when they upgrade equipment so he has tons of second hand printers to sell. I might be able to find his name if you need it but Christian Einfeldt might know off the top of his head since he got the guy to donate to his school(s.) Most distros don't seem to test scanners much. Alex, have you tried running sane-find-scanner or just xsane as root? If it works as root but not as a normal user, you might need to make a udev rule. I had to do that for my Epson Perfection 2400 in Hardy (yes, I know Hardy was a long time ago, but I've been upgrading that machine since then so I still have the old udev rule): http://shallowsky.com/blog/linux/scanning-on-hardy.html If the udev rules attached to the bug don't have a rule for your scanner, add one using the vendor and product IDs from your scanner. You can get those IDs from lsusb when the scanner is plugged in and turned on (find the line from your scanner and look for the ID 058f:6362 part -- that's vendor:product) or by running dmesg after you turn your scanner on. ...Akkana From a_kleider at yahoo.com Tue Dec 14 00:06:34 2010 From: a_kleider at yahoo.com (Alex Kleider) Date: Tue, 14 Dec 2010 00:06:34 -0800 (PST) Subject: [sf-lug] Hi; about that printer you got for your setup? I don't know much about udev but > will try to figure things out. udev is the latest scheme for making the /dev tree autopopulate with device nodes appropriate for the hardware actually present on a system. The problem scenario Akkana was describing would only potentially be present and at issue if you knew that, say, /dev/usb/scanner0 is supposed to automagically pop into existence the moment you connect your Epson Perfection 2450 and turn it on, but that device file fails to come into existence. In recent Linux systems using udev to populate the /dev tree, you no longer really want to solve missing-device-file problems using the traditional 'Well, just use mknod to create it, then' methods from Pleistocene days, such as is described in the Linux USB Guide, here: http://www.linux-usb.org/USB-guide/x291.html Why not? Simply because under the udev regime and similar things, the /dev tree evaporates and is autorebuilt at each reboot. So, if using 'mknod' to create the missing device files manually, you'd end up doing it over and over again. The long-term remedy is to create, in that case, as Akkana said, a udev rule (recipe, basically), which then does the manual creation job automatically each boottime. Aren't you glad we have things like udev to make our systems 'simpler'? ;-> About sane-find-scanner, see http://www.sane-project.org/man/sane-find-scanner.1.html, for starters. Fortunately, for scanners you can usually just copy an existing rule. But there is a secret way to use the old simple mknod: create the node in /lib/udev/devices/ rather than /dev, and udev will create it in /dev on every boot. It's possible they'll remove that at some point ... but for now it's an easy way of cheating if you know the node you want and don't want to spend days debugging a custom udev rule. ...Akkana From einfeldt at gmail.com Tue Dec 14 12:48:54 2010 From: einfeldt at gmail.com (Christian Einfeldt) Date: Tue, 14 Dec 2010 12:48:54 -0800 Subject: [sf-lug] Reminder: fundraiser tomorrow for Linux in schools tomorrow Message-ID: Hi, A number of volunteers for Partimus.org have been working very hard for free for 6.5 years now in various public schools around the Bay Area to place GNU-Linux machines in public schools. The reformulation of pylons and repoze into pyramid presents a great opportunity for zope to get back some street cred and offer sincere alternatives to front running frameworks like Django. This discussion will cover the current state of zope based technologies including repoze/pyramid, grok, bluebream, and plone. It will look at the best use cases for each framework, strengths, weaknesses, and deal breakers. Quoting Bobbie Sellers (bliss at sfo.com): > Can you give a pointer to a reference that OpenWRT is proof against > this SSL exploit? Um, not exactly. The thing is, OpenWRT is a real Linux distribution. Real Linux distributions don't have hard-coded SSL (or SSH) keys. You have to create them when you configure the WAP/router. Moreover, OpenWRT doesn't default to permitting administration from the public interface, to begin with. The best way to verify all this is to just play with OpenWRT. I got a pair of WRT54Gv2 boxes for free as cast-offs, but they and similar gear are really cheap at any time. The real challenge is to find a _good_ set of WAP/router hardware that has a desirable chipset (like Atheros), a decent amount of RAM and firmware, and (preferable) at least one high-speed USB port. The WRT54Gv2 has none of those things -- but is damned good for free hardware. Best information source about good current makes/models is... OpenWRT's discussion forums. Caveat: It's been something like a year since I set up OpenWRT from scratch, so you're on your own about that, and I don't promise to remember details. However: > Moreover, OpenWRT doesn't default to permitting administration from > the public interface, to begin with. This part I'm quite sure about. Setup is described here: http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/configuring Steps to secure administrative access are here: http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/configuring#secure.your.router.s.access Note that there _isn't_ a default SSL cert, and the recommended steps involve either redirecting the port 8080/tcp Web-admin access over Dropbear sshd or a combination of Lighthttpd and OpenSSL. Dropbear setup generates a local host keypair _dynamically_ by the administrator, and you'll notice that the OpenSSL instructions likewise run you through generating and self-signing a local cert. Ergo, as I said, not burned into the firmware. (Please be aware that OpenWRT, unlike DD-WRT, is a genuine open-source project.) OpenWrt is one of a number of very small Linux distributions for embedded router + wireless access point appliances. That whole genre was launched when Linksys released the model WRT54G "wi-fi capable residential gateway" in 2002, and Linux activists found it to be both (1) Linux-based and (2) hackable. Specifically, Linksys tried to shirk its GPL obligation to publish source code, were called on it, and furnished source code that's been crucial for the various offshoots such as DD-WRT, Tomato, and OpenWrt. With any of them, given suitable hardware (which by this point is a much wider list than just the Linksys models), you follow canned instructions to overwrite your appliance's boot firmware with the distro, which then boots thereafter and loads into RAM to run the appliance -- instead of whatever it came with. About the Linksys hardware, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linksys_WRT54G_series About the third-party distros, here's one starting point: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wireless_router_firmware_projects When I got my own pair of cheap Linksys devices as a gift (and passed one of them along to EBLUG in Fremont), I at first expected to load the very popular DD-WRT software onto them. After listening to a number of people's advice -- and grateful props to Grant Bowman on this one, in particular -- I changed my mind and went for OpenWrt. Why? A couple of things. 1. Open source. OpenWrt is; DD-WRT isn't. (It's claimed to be all GPL, but the developer has been a bit squirrely at best about compliance, and it's been proven that they include several bits of third-party kernel code under incompatible proprietary licences. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DD-WRT#Controversy and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:DD-WRT ) 2. DD-WRT is a firmware image that's not really designed to be user modified, tweaked, or anything added to it. Although in theory you can use Firmware Modification Kit, http://www.bitsum.com/firmware_mod_kit.htm , to revise and reconstruct DD-WRT, it's less practical than with OpenWrt. In particular, OpenWrt supports adding software via _packages_ (using 'opkg') without having to recompile the firmware, while DD-WRT does not. Thus, its ability to be customised and configured without difficulty is much greater. 3. OpenWrt has a much larger, more productive community. DD-WRT seems to be mostly one guy. When I loaded OpenWrt onto my pair of Linksys devices, the project was going through an awkward transition from 2.4.x to 2.6.x Linux kernels, made possible mainly by then-new availability of a good open source driver for Broadcom wireless chips, replacing the buggy and unstable proprietary driver that had been used in 2.4 kernels. At the time, you could use the new OpenWrt 8.09.1 'Kamikaze' code (with 2.6 kernels and a stable Broadcom driver) only if you compiled development code, as the official release was still OpenWrt 0.9 'WhiteRussian'. Daniel Gimpelevich was kind enough to help me with that: Compiling 8.09.1 on my Pentium III server took something like six hours(!). However, that was a couple of years ago, and the project has moved on to 10.0 'Backfire' releases, which have a good reputation -- and you can just run the release code and not have to compile anything. People who attend the CABAL meetings at my house in Menlo Park and use the Internet connectivity are reaching the Net through that OpenWrt 8.09.1 betaware on my dinky Linksys -- and, as anyone can confirm, it's been _way_ better than the previous setup that relied on my wife's Apple Airport Extreme WAP/router, which has never been reliable when under heavy use, whereas the throwaway Linksys with OpenWrt passes that test with flying colours. When I snap a CD or DVD onto the hub of a laptop's drive tray, I often spin the disc by hand before I shut the tray. If I can see the disc wobbling, it means I've done a poor job of physically mounting the disc, and the drive won't be able to read it until I fix this. If your laptop uses a slot drive, then of course this would not apply. Triage Fest for Linux in schools Message-ID: Hi, This Friday, 12/31/10, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Creative Arts Charter School at 1601 Turk Street at Pierce in San Francisco, we will be triaging old hardware. Our goal will be to comb through our pile of existing hardware to find hardware that is suitable for a basic Linux client install. We won't actually be doing the installs -- those installs will happen later, once we have triaged equipment. The goal is to separate working from non-working equipment and get the non-working equipment over to the ACCRC.org for responsible recycling. If you are interested in helping out, please email me here at this email address. We will be ordering Pizza at 1:15 p.m., so that we can eat the pizza at 2:00 p.m. Al Stoll is paying for the pizza (Thanks Al ! ). Please bring whatever tools you have to triage machines -- circuit testers, etc. Please also bring needle nose pliers if you have them, and whatever screw drivers you would need to pull apart and test machines and printers, etc. It is difficult to get into the school, so please text or call Christian Einfeldt at 415-351-1300 when you arrive, so that I can let you into the school. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Happy New Year! I will drag along the latest Linux Pro & Linux Journal magazines, and Live Disks of CDLinux both in the Community and standard releases. Standard is about 30 Megabytes in size and Community with more tools is about 225 Megabytes. These can load into memory and mount all the connected disks. Like Knoppix these are useful either for operating without an install on a PC or working on a damaged system to recover it. Oh and I finished my 3 month trial of Gnome 2.3 and switched back to KDE with which I am still having problems. One of the reasons I switched is poor performance with Brasero and CDCreator. The chief problem I am having with updated 2001.1 is failure to hibernate or indeed to shut down with using a Terminal. May you all have a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year in 2011. later Bobbie Sellers Happy New Year! I also have one that has some annoying qualities: 1. Sporadically and unpredictably, a key I press will remain in auto repeat mode even though I am not holding it down. This continues until such time as another key is hit. Although a relatively minor nuisance most of the time, when using vim it can create complete havoc. 2. When ever the charger is plugged in or unplugged, the screen goes blank and the system demands another log on. Nothing is lost, but this is an annoyance none the less. To be fair to Zareason, I have not gotten around to making arrangements to take it back to them. These might be easily fixed. Are your issues anything similar? On the subject of the Thinkpad T42: I bought one on the recommendation of Asheesh quite a long time ago and have since bought a second one when the first one died. Loading Ubuntu and more recently Fedora has never been a problem. It's as much computer as I needed. I think you'll be very happy with it. ak a_kleider at yahoo.com --- On Thu, 12/30/10, ron wellman wrote: From: ron wellman Subject: Re: [sf-lug] SF-LUG meeting this Sunday 2 January 2011 To: sf-lug at linuxmafia.com Date: Thursday, December 30, 2010, 12:31 PM I'm coming in with two laptops this sunday; the new one I bought from Zareason, which has some problems that didn't get resolved (longterm) when I took it back three times. the second one is a thinkpad T42 that has windowsXP installed for school. no longer going to classes, no longer need MS and hoping that this older laptop will handle a new install.
