I've done the proprietary wifi dance a few times in the past; black
list this driver, ndiswrapper that driver and do-see-do-your wifi.  I
found the Asus WL-167g USB adapter Just Works on reasonably recent
hardware/software combinations and it is fairly inexpensive, too (~$25
after shipping and tax:  http://snipr.com/u9s7o).

That doesn't help you understand wifi on linux, though.
