I'll look through it and see what there is to learn. In the meantime, I wanted to share, I made Network Manager work for me: 1) In /etc/network/interfaces, I commented out everything but the loopback adapter 2) As a result, both ethernet and wireless adapters got working via DHCP 3) In network manager, I added a new wired connection "Eth2" with static addresses (and made sure to plug in the MAC address of the card) 4) Then I deleted the "Auto Eth1" connection... And I'm in business. Thanks! Shawn -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... In the init script on the top level, I changed the initial init message, and started a /bin/sh just after the depmod -a in init. There was a pause of 20 seconds, then the shell became active, which allowed me to look around the live ramdisk directories. When I exited, the boot sequence continued. If you remove the "quiet" on the grub.cfg (menu.lst) kernels, you can see the progress of the boot -- The lower case "ok"s are from the initram scripts, and the upper case "OK"s are from the root file system scripts. The initrd contents varies depending upon the type of system you have. The Fedora Core systems tend to have directories like /proc and /sys set up, but Ubuntu (9.04 at least), creates such directories on the fly from the initial scripts. In either case, the first thing run is /init. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Before that time, I will be at the Mission Beacon center from 3 to 6 pm at 450 Church Street teaching a community center to use the GIMP on the 10 Ubuntu machines they have there. We are forming a nice little cluster of Linux users in the Mission. Noisebridge is just about 6 blocks from the Mission Beacon Center. So anyone who is wanting a big block of Linux community outreach time will be able to come to the Mission Beacon center from 3 to 6, and then to Noisebridge from 6 pm to 8 pm. And halfway in between Mission Beacon and Noisebridge is Pancho Villa, which has some of the wold's best burritos. It is nothing short of heart-warming to see the people using the Ubuntu Linux machines at the Mission Beacon Center. They had no working computers, now they have 10 working Ubuntu Linux computers. And the kids push and shove to get time on these machines. Awesome. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <4B44F39F.2050700@petty.me.uk> Hello, I have a desktop machine running Ubuntu 9.04 which has been freezing, and sometimes not starting at all. I press the power button, and sometimes the power and fan come on, but the machine doesn't boot. Other times, the machine starts to boot, goes through grub fine, and then freezes on the Ubuntu logo screen. If it gets past that, it tries to do a "Routine check of drives" but freezes during that, unless I skip it using Escape. It it gets past all of those, it starts up, functions fine, connects to network, and so on, but then at a random point it will freeze. When it freezes, the power button and reset button on the front don't work at all, so I have to flip the power supply switch on the back to turn it off. I opened it up, checked the connections, cleaned out a little dust, but I can't see anything wrong. Any advice? Regards, Matthew p.s. I'd bring it to Noisebridge tonight, but it's a tower case, and I'll be going straight there from work. You should check for bad hardware: first memory, then disk, as those are the most common hardware failures. For memory use memtest86+. For disk use smartd.
