[sf-lug] ubuntu server 8.04 doesn't seem to see IDE drives

looks like i've got a few possible routes: 
* alternative install, gotta download and burn 
* usbstick, gotta relearn how to make it bootable 
* pull a drive into a box that'll take the install 
without barfing, then install, then restore the 
drive to its home and hope networking works.
