very interesting to me. a few points: 

* i wish you'd let us know in advance, assuming 
we could have come, too. 
* there are more licenses than GPL

* firefox is managed by the mozilla foundation 
http://www.mozilla.org/foundation/ 
* a few reasons for creating software for free include 
--- show off and develop a hireable reputation 
--- create some feature you want for yourself and that 
will benefit from others' inputs 
--- create a baseline software program that leverages 
the open source community for development and 
maintenance so that you can put your limited resources 
into using the program (usually extending the code for 
your specialized purposes). 
--- ethical and moral considerations of sharing knowledge 
and benefiting from potentially large numbers of 
contributors, some of whom will have new ideas for 
expansion or application.
