[sf-lug] problems with exim4 on ubuntu server 8.04.1

host runs ubuntu server 8.04.1 and exim4.
logged into the host we can send mail "out there"
but cannot send mail from "out there" into the box
and to a valid user: mail gets to the box and the
mailer daemon returns it because "the following
address(es) failed: " (complete transcript is at
the bottom of this message; address seems to be
a valid user, i.e. one that can ssh to the host
specified by the domain name jim at systemateka.com ).

where to look on the box?
$ dig systemateka.com MX
shows mx record.
router has NAT set to port 25 for inbound email to the box.
/etc/exim4/* files may be missing some vital parameter,
though so far we can't see what.
/var/lib/exim4/* files, owners, and permissions seem to work
