I've found that using my new Thinkpad (X61 Tablet)'s built-in microphone
and my nice normal music headphones (Grado SR-80), everyone including me
is very happy. But your computer may not be portable, or it may not have
a good built-in mic.

P.S. This batch of list mail coming from me indicates that I'm on a plane
with work I'm procrastinating doing. Finally back in SF tonight.
P.P.S. This new computer is frickin' amazing. 1400x1050 resolution in a
12" screen! ThinkPad keyboard! Solid battery life. And the tablet part
is actually pretty cool now that I got it working (which was pretty easy
once I stopped entering in obviously wrong configuration entries).
