I also would be happy to take a laptop: it would be for a friend of my
wife, a lady of very limited means who for many years now has been
running a summer camp program in Bolinas. The "donation" could actually
be made to the camp making it cleaner in the sense that it wouldn't
become her personal property.

On a related issue: she had an old Macintosh laptop but I'm told the
hard drive crashed. I was going to buy and try to install a new one (I
understand they are not very expensive.) 

The other problem is that she would like to salvage her data if at all
possible. (Camp records from previous years which I guess could be
carried over saving her a lot of work.)
She's been told that that service would cost $400! That would be
prohibitive for most, certainly for her budget. Does anyone know if
there's a less expensive option? Perhaps someone was just trying to rip
her off...
