Good suggestion, Jim.
# man memtest
yielded no entry, but
# memtest --help
suggested I install memtester
# apt-cache show memtest
was unhelpful but
# apt-cache show memtester
tells me that memtest is a utility for testing the memory subsystem:
Is that fancy talk for just checking for the integrity of RAM?
So it can be done from the command line, I guess.
by the way: the above results were obtained on an Ubuntu7.10
installation.
A current Debian machine never acknowledges the existence of
memtest[er].
