thanks, Sameer, Kristian and Asheesh;
am I to conclude that memtest is only a boot option, 
and that testing memory is NOT something that can be done from the 
command line of an already running Linux system?

$ memtest
gave me a command not found message, while

# memtest
just immediately puts another command prompt onto the next line with no
message of any kind and no indication that anything was done.
