[sf-lug] John the Ripper

I'd like to test for the strength of passwords on my system.
Is John the Ripper a good choice
and 
is it available via apt-get install (i.e. what does Debian call it?)
or must one download it from openwall and use # make?
Any and all advice would be much appreciated.
