Every external USB-based hard drive will Just Work (tm).  I suggest 
Seagate drives because they have long warranties and my anecdotal 
experience with them has been good.

To verify that it's a normal USB drive, you can check that the label says 
it'll work with Mac OS X, which is a good sign, or for the phrase "USB 
mass storage device" which is the specific standard that Linux supports 
and that everyone uses.
