I just happened to notice an error message when edubuntu was logging off.
The error message said that timidity was not configured properly, or
something approximately close to that.  Otherwise, as Jim Stockford said,
using top might let you know that the process was runaway.  Simply open a
shell and type

top

at the prompt.
