Basically, farms/clusters of machines, to spot down conditions,
performance congestion, overheating, etc.  The classic open-source 
monitoring package is Nagios.  Groundwork, the company that sponsors the
Monitoring SIG, produces, installs, and supports a superset of Nagios
with proprietary extensions.
