Have you tried both usb 2 and usb 3 keys? My current older X58 motherboard's BIOS does not see my usb 3 key if it is plugged into one of the motherboard's usb 3 ports, but it does see it and boot from it when the key is plugged into one of the motherboard's usb 2 ports. You should be able to see the key in the BIOS menu whether it is bootable or not. My desktop uses F11 to bring up the boot device menu while my laptop uses F12.

On Sun, Jan 10, 2016 at 10:50 PM, Paul Zander <paulz@ieee.org> wrote:

I downloaded several live .ISO files with the expectation of "test drive" before doing install. However, I can't seem to make a thumb drive bootable.
On a Linux machine I did used dd to write to the USB stick.
dd if=debian-live-8.2.0-amd64-lxde-desktop.iso of=/dev/sdh1 bs=4M ; sync
A listing the directory on the USB drive showed several files and directories. I had not just copied the .iso file.
However, after rebooting the computer and remembering which key to press to change boot order, the thumb drive was not listed as a choice.

I also tried the utility UNetbootin on a Windoz machine with similar results?

Any suggestions?
