I forgot to mention, that SMC has a reputation for producing stable products that work well with "plain vanilla" drivers. Using the Atheros chipset doesn't guarantee it will work. But I think that that Atheros, in general, works well with Linux.

- Adrien

Christian Einfeldt <einfeldt@gmail.com> wrote:hi

On 7/3/07, K Sandoval <indigo.kai@gmail.com> wrote:

I am getting ready to do fresh installations of Ubuntu 7.04

I have heard lots of complaints about Feisty. I am currently using both Feisty and openSUSE 10.2, but I actually
had to downgrade from Feisty to Edgy to use some video-related tools. Ubuntu is great, but it actually moves so quickly that it moves ahead of some projects' ability to keep up. It is entirely possible that the fault was on my part, but I don't think so, because I had a lot of help from a guy who is really pro-Ubuntu and is pretty good a writing BASH scripts. He wrote a bunch of BASH scripts for the Digital Tipping Point film project, and we spent probably 8 hours trying to get his scripts and the underlying video-related packages working under Feisty, but were unable to do so. If you want to see an example of his work, you can go here to see the overview:

http://digitaltippingpoint.com/wiki/index.php?title=CJE_Documentation

These are some of the shell scripts that he wrote:

<a

We downgraded to Edgy and everything worked instantly. I know that this doesn't exactly address the issues you were presenting, which is actually why I raise this point. You might have investigated some aspects of Feisty, but you might not have considered other issues with Feisty.

I am looking for suggestions and a stamp of approval. If anyone has a recommendation or suggestions, please feel free to share your suggestions/recommendations/feedback.

Right. My basic recommendation: Try to implement it on Edgy first.
Feisty is fresh out of the oven still, and maybe not really done baking. Just my two cents.

Another suggestion would be to consider trying openSuSE 10.2 . I have never had problems getting openSUSE to recognize hardware. Of course, with openSUSE you don't get the benefit of the whole Debian pool, which is always a detractor for me, and YAST is not as good an apps installer IMHO as the Adept package manager, which is what I use under Edgy. But it sometimes is nice to have alternatives.

Christian Einfeldt,
Producer, The Digital Tipping Point
_______________________________________________
conspire mailing list
conspire@linuxmafia.com
http://linuxmafia.com/mailman/listinfo/conspire
