There is also a security advantage to solar. One solar panel is easier
to take out with a drone than one oil refinery or natural gas pumping
station, but any given drone budget will destroy far more total value in
oil and gas than in PV. I don't think it's a coincidence that a lot of
countries with active counterterrorism+counterinsurgency research and
countries that are leading in drone development are also high PV adopters.
We're still seeing a lot of promising research on combining solar with
other land uses. Canals and reservoirs, specific crops or livestock,
parking and warehouses...
