I downloaded and built Microsoft Edit --
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/06/microsoft-surprises-ms-dos-fans-with-remake-of-ancient-text-editor-that-works-on-linux/
-- and it's pretty slick. Runs in a terminal but should be not confusing
for people used to GUI conventions on other platforms. (Mouse works for
menus and selecting text. ctrl-x, ctrl-c, ctrl-v work, you can do alt-f
to open the file menu, all that stuff.)
It doesn't look like there are any dependency or license issues with
packaging it, and there are packages in some of the distributions
already. When this gets into the mainstream distributions, users who
read docs that say "edit the file..." and type "edit" followed by the
filename will get something that works.
