http://www.bbc.com  has this headline:China and US are at each other's throats on tariffs, and neither is backing down

IMO,  Trump likes to play tic-tak-toe  And he likes to initiate the game so he can make the first move with the center square.  Anything more complicated, like checkers is beyond his comfort zone.
The Chinese like to play Go.  A game much more complex than chess.   And they have a long view of time.  If they can't get something today, they plan to strengthen their position in 5 or 10 years.
Trump shaking up international relations reinforces Xi's narrative that China is a friendly country.

They can list it for sale, but who's buying it?

Even if free, the maintenance burden would be enormous. A modern day
white elephant.

Did that - years ago:

They've shown they're ready and willing (eager!) to comply:

Never thought a coup in America would be welcomed by so many and yet,
despite the despair of many (the majority?), hardly a damned whimper
would be heard.

Can't do anything to incite the baddies, that may cause them to drop the
restraint they're so famous for. Apparently.

Good luck down there.
