  FDA NEWS RELEASE
  FDA Approves First COVID-19 Vaccine
Approval Signifies Key Achievement for Public Health
  For Immediate Release:
  August 23, 2021
Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first COVID-19
vaccine. The vaccine has been known as the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19
Vaccine, and will now be marketed as Comirnaty (koe-mir’-na-tee), for
the prevention of COVID-19 disease in individuals 16 years of age and
older. The vaccine also continues to be available under emergency use
authorization (EUA), including for individuals 12 through 15 years of
age and for the administration of a third dose in certain
  immunocompromised individuals.
For now, there is no US vaccine option for under age 12, and only
a Pfizer Emergency Use Authorization for ages 12-16. The EUAs for
Moderna and J&J/Janssen are likely to be upgraded to full authorisation,
soon. The spectacularly effective Novavax vaccine has had a setback of
a few months, and will be rolled out elsewhere before in the USA.

Here's why Novavax is important:

The mRNA Vaccines Are Extraordinary, but Novavax Is Even Better
Persistent hype around mRNA vaccine technology is now distracting us
from other ways to end the pandemic.
  By Hilda Bastian
Short version:
o 90% efficiency in June Phase III trials against a mix of variants
  o uses traditional protein-subunit technology
o substantially lower rate and severity of side effects
  o requires two doses
o Unlike mRNA vaccines, stable at 2 to 8°C (36 to 46°F) storage
Novavax is thus poised to make a huge difference around the world,
particularly in lesser-developed countries where mRNA vaccines are not
practical.
For now, Canada, the Phiippines, UK, Singapore, and EU are known to have
purchase agreements for millions of doses.
_Why_ is this so important? Because, if we don't pretty soon start
treating this as as _worldwide_ problem rather than one where borders
matter, we're going to have new disasters -- including highly fatal
blowback onto developed countries, and Charles Stross explains why:
