Ahh, I am confused or there is a typo. I can't find any reference to Lathan Lane. The closest match from Google is a Nathan Lane born 1956.
Sunset was published by Lane Publishing form 1929 to 1990 when it was sold to Time Warner in 1990.
Let me add another historic house to the discussion. Museum of American Heritage, MOAH, on Homer Avenue in Palo Alto is a modest family home. A gift from the Lane family allowed the house and gardens to be restored. More at: http://www.moah.org/williams.html
Several times a year, they host a "Repair Cafe". People bring broken bicycles, toaster etc and a volunteer crew restores them to working order and out of the landfill. http://www.repaircafe-paloalto.org/
