I just got home from the relaunch meeting of the East Bay AWS users group.

Users groups, in most cases have degeneratedaway from being users groups
into regulars who
show up by pavlovian training.
Often nothing technical is presented, and a bunch of people sit around a
table staring into their screens.
The mission of LUGs has particularly been taken over by stack exchange.

Not so with East Bat AWS users group meeting.
This was a REAL users group meeting, the likes Ive not seen in years.
This was not a group of people who showed up for free pizza and beer,
willing to
watch paint dry for the experience.
This was an engaged crowd, quite knowlwdgeable to boot.

This was NOT a typical "Meet Up" despite being plugged on the meet up page.

The plan is too meet alternate months in the Pleasanton area.

We had several speakers tonight, but the star speaker was a financial
consiultant that helps companies tame their cloud bills.

"Corey Quinn - Cloud Economist - And the CFO Wept: Cost Control for AWS"

The guy was hysterically funny.
Who knew accountants could be fun??!!??

The problem is that in the stampede to the cloud, people forget that the
cost saving of the cloud is the ability to spin up resources on the spot
and terminate them just as fast.

If your machine is going to be up all the time, the cloud will be more
expensive than leaving it running in a co lo cage.

So as not to bore too much, if you want to know more, ask.

My point was that tonight we has a users group that ACTED like a REAL UG!
