...2. could Linux desktop go reasonably any
 faster?...
I currently like lxqt and TDE. as light - er desktops . Distro s like puppy have even smaller / lighter desktops , but they don't have as many amenities . A frugal install of puppy loads the compressed .iso image from hd. faster than if from optical or a full ram loading of an uncompressed install . After that it was plenty fast as everything came straight from ram. . I think I really liked ~ kdpup484 as it had old kde. [ now tde. ] . Such installs do remain rare because of their drawbacks . One will wind up using slow swap vs ram when the size of data + os. .iso + currently unpacked applications - and then things get really slow . Other people report they can make persistence work reliably too . YMMV. .
 - Best Wishes - Bruce
