Most particularly:


1.  The list of problem packages was wrong, having both erroneous
inclusions (lighttpd, etc. -- which does NOT have a problem) and
erroneous omissions.  

The major losses on Debian 8 Jessie with non-default inits are these DEs
as a _whole_:  GNOME, MATE, Cinnamon, KDE, and (technically now-defunct)
Razor-qt.  Most individual apps from those DEs would remain installable,
just not the big metapackages of each.  Also annoying is hplip, but
fortunately the parts of that metapackage of primary interest,
printer-driver-hpcups and printer-driver-hpijs, remain installable with
any init.

And some people expect NetworkManager to work outside GNOME, but its
tangled dependencies sink it in this case.
