FWIW, I've fried the circuit before.  It wa so frustrating to lose an
expensive box for that reason.  I managed to use a USB port, but it was
the only port on that hardware.  I was lucky the hardware accepted that.
 I think on newer equipment you can hot swap it.  I'd done it either
accidentally or on purpose.
