Chiming in a little late, but, here's my 2c
What Rick said. What Daniel said.
Also,
=Matt, why are you upgrading in place if you
are concerned about the risk? Do you have
lots of special customizations? If not, a phillips
screwdriver and a new hard drive will give you
better performance. You can get ~terabyte laptop-
sized SSHDs for about $110 these days, and you
can treat your upgrade as a full backup.
SSHD drives are especially good, since they
eliminate seek time on whatever portions of
the disk are most commonly used by mirroring
them to non-spinning media. Depending on
settings, the spinning rust can even turn off
for long periods. G-force ratings, and presumably
reliablility are higher as well.
Or even, you could run the OS off a stick. I've
been running this Fujitsu U904 Windows 8 laptop
off a Sandisk Extreme USB-3.0 stick for the past
several months. It's Debian 7.3, not Ubuntu, but
should be "same diff" as my Pennsylvania relatives
would say.
