Depending on how much bandwidth is required, and where exactly transformers
are, you may be able to get away with using a powerline adapter.

I once.. ahem.. knew a guy.. cough cough.. who used the emergency lighting
circuit in a stairwell.

I've never personally tested the range on the adapters, although they claim
~500 - 1000ft depending on the model. I'd double check before buying one
though.
