You have to admire the, um, self-confidence of a complete stranger 3000
miles away who decides to pick my name off my Web site and send e-mail
asking me (using Microsoft Outlook 12.0) for free-of-charge PC
consulting, because he knows I'm some kind of Linux guy who wrote about
EIDE in 1997, and therefore I surely should be falling over myself
looking for an opportunity to help his boss who he says specifically has
no interest in Linux and is seeking free-of-charge consulting so she can
install Windows 7 Pro.

In retrospect, apparently he found
http://linuxmafia.com/faq/Hardware/eide.html, and based on that decided
to 'Hi Rick' me.

Hi Rick,

I am thinking of attempting to install an OWC Mercury Legacy 3.5" SSD
IDE/ATA 480GB $520. kit SSD drive in my boss' HP Compaq, 2005 model, dc5000
MT Microtower PC

Apparently this OWC product ships with a PATA adapter{I guess this fact
makes the product: "a kit"}

I do want to do this, as I had so much success in choosing and ordering and
installing the 4GB RAM memory upgrade{$122. from www.crucial.com}; as well
as the Jaton PCI Dual Channel 128 MB Nviidia 6200 PCI video card{$82. from
www.4allmemory.com}. We installed both in early May (2013). I read your
1996-1999? article on EIDE.. and read something in it about a 500MB! IDE
limit and thought this meant a 500GB! IDE/ATA limit

The biggest Mercury Legacy SSD 3.5" drive that OWC is selling as a kit is
this very 480GB drive for $520.

A lot of money to upgrade an old computer yet I am doing this mostly for my
own fun/hobby yet still even expensive for that (:

Please let me know if I should abandon this recent favorite idea of mine

I don't want to do linux as she is not interested in it

If it turns out that I can install such an SSD drive using this/such a PATA
adaptor, we are planning on installing Windows 7 Pro 32bit OEM, which will
purchase concurrently{I checked with MS and Win 7 -will- run on my Nvidia
6200 video card}

What do you think??? Can we do this??? And if so, do you have any
links/sites that you would be willing to share???

I realize that you may suggest that I scrap this/my idea of installing such
an SSD drive, and instead purchase a new system (:

please let me know..

many thanks in advance,

> Hi Rick,

Hello there. Your e-mail address doesn't ring any bells, and I'm very
sorry if I'm being forgetful, but offhand I can't recall an Andy in
Philadelphia. Your addressing me as 'Rick' would seem to suggest that
we're friends, so can you please help me out on that point? Please
remind me of who you are, and how we know each other.

Thanks!
