Much agreement on upstream / downstream / maintainer issues.

One benefit of building from source according to the developer's instructions is 
that you can file bugs directly with the developer / site if need be, but 
chasing down all the myriad dependencies and figuring out how to build them can 
quickly become a long term project. Hello, maintainer.

FWIW, you can also search ubuntu and debian's repositories via 
packages.ubuntu.com and packages.debian.org by appending the name of a package 
to the URL for a quick search (e.g. "packages.ubuntu.com/rep" turns up a number 
of matches, but no repsnapper). This can be useful as you can download 
individual packages from repositories that are not already setup in your system.

A better example would be MySQL-doc (full manual package), which is not in 
current ubuntu repos, can be found via packages.ubuntu.com/mysql-doc and 
downloaded for install via 'dpkg -i <PKGNAME>.deb'.
