Nexenta, which I mentioned separately, is often described as being
almost/sort-of Debian on a non-Linux kernel. (It's on an IlumOS
ex-Solaris foundation.) I haven't tried it, but have heard good things
about it. I suspect it has greater code maturity than the kFreeBSD
flavour of Debian does.
Specifically, what I'd probably do is have a Nexenta box dedicated to
being the network's big-storage box, but Linux or $OTHER_FAVOURITE_IX
boxen for one's other substantive computing.
