Speaking of which, isn't the MP3 format now 20 years
old, which would mean that any _essential_ patents
would be expiring this year or next?  (Not that
every encoder becomes safe this year, just that you
should be able to do a decode and a basic encode,
so you could make a podcast listenable on a cheap
device or "MP3 CD" this year.)  Since I have a "face
for podcasting" I'm more interested in audio than
video patents anyway.  Anyone heard about the MP3 in
2011/2012 story one way or the other?
