Next time you happen to be going across the Richmond - San Rafael Bridge
(if you go that way), have a look off to the south side, near the
western end of the bridge. You'll see a small, steep-sided island with
a few trees near the top, 150 metres across and 50 metres tall. That's
Red Rock. And part of it's in the City of San Francisco. Now, _that's_
gerrymandering.
The island's actually trisected between governments: San Francisco,
Richmond, and Marin County.
As of mid-2007, it was on the market with an asking price of $10 M.
It's the only privately owned island in San Francisco Bay.
I suspect the reason Menlo Park pushed its boundaries out to the
southeastern limit of San Mateo County is that, at the time, its refuse
disposal (town dump) area was there. (Now, it's in the hills off the
main road to Half Moon Bay.)
