I've never looked at the first one, but I did play just slightly with
musictex, and
found it to be very difficult because it basically is a TeX front end
and for me that
makes it a bit counterintuitive especially for middle school students.
It can produce
very nice looking scores, at least from my running a couple demo
scripts years ago.

One that looks promising at least in my opinion is rosegarden.
