First day of availability for the new house is a week from today. (No,
sorry, the outgoing tenants are still there, today.)
Apologies for the planning for this seeming a bit haphazard. Major work
_is_ already occurring at our house, BTW. We're stuck waiting for a few
things: 1. We've not gotten the rental agreement from the management
company, yet. It may arrive in today's mail. 2. Everyone's hazy on
which rooms at 1105 Altschul Avenue will need "touchup painting", and
how long that will delay move-in. 3. The outgoing tenants weren't even
_very_ definite on when we could take possession, though Monday, May 8
seems very likely.
Our household is a little... balkanised... when it comes to moveout.
This isn't the answer you were looking for, but it's the one I have:
The Rick Part
My own belongings are relatively modest, and I've had a lifelong policy
of owning only personal belongings I can easily move by myself, unaided
-- which I've done, quite a few times. I've asked the other two
residents to please leave my _all_ of my belongings alone to the extent
possible, and I will attend to those belonging personally.
Many of my belongings are, after six years, still in boxes in the
2033 Sharon garage, because I was prevented from moving them into the
house by Deirdre's things getting there first. The silver lining is
that those belongings therefore remain pretty easy for me to move.
I do _not_ plan to take off time from work. Therefore, I expect I'll
arrive at 2033 Sharon Road soon after 5 PM, Monday the 8th, and spend
that evening _and_ Tuesday evening moving my things plus communal things
plus assisting with Deirdre and Cheryl's things. I have repeatedly
reassured them that I can move all of my things inside of two days.
I will be grateful of (careful) assistance with my things from friends
and CABAL members, but don't expect I'd need it. The more other people
help, the greater the need for coordination and the more likelihood of
damage or things going missing, in my experience. Thus, I'm not in the
least un-grateful for offers of help: I'm just a little cautious.
The Other Folks' Part
Deirdre and Cheryl have, I believe, gotten a price quotation from some
professional mover to handle some significant fraction of their things.
I've not been a part of that planning, so I really don't know details.
They bought colour-coded sticker labels for various people's stuff, so
that whoever handles the boxes (and such) can, in theory, know whose it
is and where it goes. I've not been a part of that planning, either.
I heard Deirdre say, the other day, that she expected me to be moving my
things on Monday and Tuesday, and expected that she and her mother to
move their things after that. (I might have mis-heard.)
I would actually encourage them to NOT wait for me to move, and to start
at the earliest possible opportunity. My assumption is that I'll be
working around them. The sooner we're all out of 2033 Sharon, the
sooner we'll cease paying rent on two hosues.
I think it fair to say that Deirdre owns the lion's share of our
household's contents. Accumulation of that gear proceeded over the last
six years against the background of my saying our house was too small
for it, that it'd be a problem when we moved, and that I had a problem
with it. To her great credit, she's been getting rid of a lot of stuff,
including making a heroic effort to sell or give away yarn. For her
part, Cheryl has done an awesome job boxing books and other gear,
already.
The Big Picture
I've advised Deirdre that, since she's the one whose belongings pose
overwhelmingly the biggest problem, she -- not me -- should assume
leadership in contacting and coordinating volunteer help. I hope she
does do so.
