[conspire] Managing wifi in linux

I have an Ubuntu Linux laptop that works great in all respects, but I
haven't found the right way to manage wifi. Windows and Mac boxes can
automatically discover available networks, keep track of which ones
you prefer, remember the WEP keys, and automatically join your
preferred networks when one is in range. For Linux what I do is "sudo
kismet" to find a network, then I have a simple shell script I wrote
myself which does the various iwconfig and dhclient commands to get it
working. It works fine but it's annoying. Surely there must be a
better way? Some gizmo built into Gnome/Ubuntu desktop that does this
for me? I looked around in various docs but never found anything...
