You're right, sorry it was my fault -- I was being misled by what 
I guess is a bug in the version of mozilla that SuSE SLES-9 is using:
mozilla-1.6-74.3 - it always shows 2047M for big files like this.

If I look using ftp instead of mozilla, the files are indeed as you describe.
