I've taken quite a shine to Fabrice Bellard's QEMU, as well. E.g.:
http://damnsmalllinux.org/usb-qemu.html
http://ftp.belnet.be/packages/damnsmalllinux/current/dsl-1.4-embedded.zip

(QEMU as configured in the above-cited "embedded" image of Damn Small
Linux does have the trait of emulating the entire PC aka "full system
emulation mode", and thus is a bit draggy. That's done so that the DSL
virual session can run exactly the same on top of either a running
Windows or running Linux host system -- and the Zip archive provides
both a DOS/Windows batch file and a Bash shell script, accordingly.
If running only on Linux hosts, one can instead configure QEMU to use
the much faster, if I understand correctly, "user-mode emulation" setting.

An add-on called "QEMU Accelerator" is available as a free-of-charge
proprietary binary, but I haven't tried it.)
